"Five years."

Mal never remembers these things on his own. It's more when he steps up to the bar and he receives a note of congratulations from his mother the Barman and a cupcake from the bar.

"Wow."

Mal orders a Coke to go with the cupcake, requesting also a pad of paper and a ballpoint pen to get some notes written out for later.

Come on by when he settles into a booth. He's got the time, apparently.

"She can work with everyone. She don't invite 'em all home for Christmas."

"Ah. Well, I guess she just felt like cooking for someone, and I didn't have plans."

It's still an odd expression on Mal's face, like he's trying to poke holes in Charlie's story.

But his mom does tend to pick up strays. It's plausible.

(They're usually younger.)

"Fair enough."

"I actually thought I would get to meet you then, in fact. I think she is one for having people home for the holiday."

That smarts a little. He should have been more so. They saw each other, of course, with it being so much easier from Milliways, but not enough.

"She is."

"She's very traditional. Which, I have to say, is really unexpected, given that those traditions are already dying in my day." And given that so much of the world he knows is forgotten.

"Depends on what traditions you're talkin' on. She cares about family and connection - any tradition you can keep around a table."

"I meant Christmas. She seems to celebrate it with a touch of the early 20th century."

"That seems to be where most of her friends from Milliways also come from. The Winchesters, Ennis 'n Jack..."

"Can't say I know those people."

"You probably won't never meet Ennis and Jack. Winchesters come 'n go from their 'verse.

"Careful about askin' on Ennis. Dong ma?"

Never tell Charlie not to ask something. Now he will HAVE to ask. If at the right moment and gingerly at that.

"I'll be careful."

Mal may be aware of that. He didn't tell Charlie not to ask; that's his mother's business.

And he may be putting money on him getting told that pretty heavily.

"Fair enough. But that's your own business with Ma."

"Nevertheless, I don't mind a little advice. Just no rule that anyone has to take it." He rarely does.

"And I'm not the best at unasked-for advice."

"I think," he says with a very straight face, "that is best left your mother."

"You may be right."
