Mal never remembers these things on his own. It's more when he steps up to the bar and he receives a note of congratulations from his mother the Barman and a cupcake from the bar.

"Wow."

Mal orders a Coke to go with the cupcake, requesting also a pad of paper and a ballpoint pen to get some notes written out for later.

Come on by when he settles into a booth. He's got the time, apparently.

Jo shrugged, fingertips pressing on hip bones.

"About as much as than normal."

"Oh, clearly."

Mal exhales quickly through tight lips.

"I need crime."

Jo raised an eyebrow.

The last time a man said something like that her, she got shot in the foot.
Well. And some other things happened, too.



"Never been opposed to some rule breakin' myself."

"I'll keep that in mind when I get a job lined up?"

"Sure. Why not? Haven't been off this rock in a while to a place that wasn't mine."

And, you know, if she survived summoning Verity, and talking to her, getting away might be good.

"And there's shooting of things! What could go wrong."

"Everything." Jo smiled.

"But that's why you go."

"Maybe."

He doesn't want to admit that Kaylee and Inara and everyone else has always been right - that the chance of not coming back is always there, and Mal doesn't like it when it's not.

So he doesn't.
