Leaving, Briefly.
PeeJee had been upstairs a long while, thinking in what felt like circles. Now she was ready to come back down... for a while. "Excuse me?" she asked a passing waitrat. "Is there somewhere I can leave a few things for someone and make sure they'll get them-- and no one else will?"
If a rat could understand Bring this man a nutrition shake, surely it could understand that.
The rat motioned her over to the bar. It did a complicated pantomime including giving the bar a fork... which vanished into the surface of the bar. Then it chattered at the bar, and the fork reappeared. It looked (though it must have been a she, as you can always tell if a rat is a he) at PeeJee expectantly.
"So... I just give the bar what I have and tell it what to do with the stuff?" The rat nodded. "Cool. Thanks."
The rat scampered off.
"Um. Bar?" She set two commlinks and a letter on the bar. "When Kitt Knight next comes in, would you please give these to him? Or back to me, if I get back before he gets them?"
The items disappeared, leaving behind a short note that read Yes. Which then disappeared.
"... Okay. Thank you."
Dear Kitt,
If you get this note, it means I didn't get back before you braved the bar again. I'll be back as soon as I can, I just have an early shift tomorrow and have to sleep in Boston tonight.
I love you.
You should be given your commlinks with this note, if I can figure out how to make that work-- you're the one who should decide who gets them and who doesn't. I'm so happy for you and Karr, and so glad that you're safe here. I didn't want to admit it before, but I hated thatyou had to the part about your job where you had no choice about driving into danger. It would change so much if it were something you were willing to do, instead of something you had to do because Michael's your driver.
Karr's found a way to change that. Karr's fucking brilliant; I like him a lot.
But I love you.
It's easier to write than it is to say, for some reason. I love you. More solid, more real. More inclined to stay and not just fade when the sound waves ebb. I love you.
I've got my commlink with me, in case you need anything. We know it will work from your home universe to Milliways, so I don't see why it wouldn't work from Milliways to my home universe.
Love (so much!),
PeeJee
