Luna Lovegood walks into the bar with her nose buried in Beyond Basilisks: The Hidden World of Experimental Breeding.

She seems only vaguely aware that she has stepped from Hogwarts into Milliways. Her attention is on her book. And on the faint rustling sound that has been following her since the end of her Transfiguration class. Clearly, she thinks, her ear for detecting nargles is improving.

In actuality, the rustling can be attributed to the sign stuck to the back of her robe – a piece of parchment with LOONY LOVEGOOD in purple and puce.

It's fairly lurid. And flashing.

"It just seems like sense."

Luna doesn't feel terribly profound.

"Things are always starting and stopping all through life."

School years. Homes. Relationships. People themselves.

"Yeah. And the trick is to start when you can."

"I feel like there's a lot I haven't started yet."

"Me too, actually. I got a whole life ahead of me." And really no plans other than saving the world.

"Me too." Long or short. "I'm thirteen. Fourteen in February. So if nothing bad or unexpected happens, I should have quite a long one."

Of course Luna knows, better perhaps than some of her peers, that bad and unexpected things can happen.

"How do you decide where to start?"

Some things are easy. School years start and end on a schedule. Not everything is quite so predictable.

He thought she was bit older. Too bad. She's cute. But he's way too old for her. 18!

"You know, I'm still not sure. Some days, I just go and do stuff. Some days...some days I wonder if I should go to college or try to get a job or do more solo work."

Practically a lifetime in teen years.

"Would any of those things make you especially happy?"

One probably can't use it as the only criteria. But it would be a good place to start.

"I don't think so. But I've been a Titan for a couple of years now, and I figure sooner or later, we all have to try something new.

"Then again, why mess with success?" He wonders if the other Titans have the same questions.

"Well," Luna says, thoughtfully, "you wouldn't have to make any great changes right away."

"Perhaps you could just try things out."

"Like a hobby."

"Oh, I have hobbies. Lots of them.

"You have any, besides reading forbidden books?"

"A fair few."

It's the byproduct of spending a lot of time on one's own.

"I spend a good deal of time with the thestral herd. And keeping an eye out for nargles. I send Dad ideas for stories if I hear of anything interesting. I like to draw and paint. And make things."

Luna reaches up and taps the lobe of one ear, where a homemade earring in the shape of a radish dangles.

"That's...cool?" He doesn't know from jewelry. "What's a nargle? And is your dad a writer?"

"He's the editor of the Quibbler," Luna says, proudly.

Containing all the news that the Daily Prophet deems unfit to print.

"So, yes, he writes a great deal. He's also an inventor. And researches creatures that most people think don't exist."

"Like nargles."

"My dad's an inventor, too. Made my parts. Or at least the ones I had at first." Cy is always improving on things.

"Really?"

Luna takes a step back to get a new look at the machine parts.

"He must be quite bright."

Wizard prosthetics tend to be a bit rougher.

"Yeah, he is. Could be a better dad, but he's one of the best engineers at STAR Labs." There is a hint of resentment. Not surprise there.

Luna frowns a bit at that.

Mr. Lovegood is not, and has never been, what anyone might call a raging success at most of his endeavors.

But he is very good at being a dad. At least in Luna's estimation. Which is really the one that matters.

"He must care about you," she ventures, "to invent so many parts so that you'd be all right again."

"He didn't really invent them for me. At least not all of them. He's trying to come up with replacement limbs for soldiers and amputees and the like. I was just kinda lucky that he was able to go further." A lot further.
