Today, Ako has decided, is no day for a run outside. Between the weather’s persistent slide into awful, the charred hole thing out by the trees and the giant, polite, (many toothed) dragon not long ago, today is a day to stay inside with a mug of hot chocolate. Also, a deck of cards to try building a house with.

Botherable!

Hey, here's a familiar face. Indeed, it was Ako's face for a brief period.

The card house in progress gets his attention, and D0G lumbers over for a closer look.

Ako stops trying to add anything while D0G is moving. It's a losing proposition.

"Um. Hello D0G."

D0G gives Ako a little wave, then points at the cards with a curious Bweep?.

"I was building a card house D0G-san," explains Ako, "You balance two against each other and then put one across the top."

D0G cants his head to one side. It doesn't look like a very good house, to him. Not much structural integrity.

That's kind of the point. You make it work despite the problems.

"It is a little tricky," allows Ako, "And it falls down a lot, but I'm just doing it for fun."

"Have you been well D0G-san?"

D0G nods. He lifts one foot, hesitates, then drops it again. (Stomping out a message in Morse Code seems like a bad idea when Ako is building.)

Double bad - Ako doesn't know Morse code.

"Were you about to try something D0G-san?"

Perhaps yes or no questions have a better chance of working.

D0G nods.

"Was it going to be some sort of code?"

Nod.

"I'm not good at codes," says Ako, "Let me go and see if Bar-san has anything that might help."

Ako comes back with a Morse code chart, some scratch paper with a pencil, an English-Japanese dictionary and a length of copper pipe. Some days Bar hands out the weirdest stuff.

"Try tapping the pipe instead D0G-san."

...huh. D0G never thought of that!

He takes the pipe delicately in one hand and taps on it with a finger of the other. (The mun will translate his tapping, since writing it out gets old in a hurry.)

D-0-G H-A-S B-E-E-N P-L-A-Y-I-N-G W-I-T-H S-K-I-T-C-H

"Skitch?"

D0G nods.

S-K-I-T-C-H I-S D-0-G-'-S F-R-I-E-N-D

Uh-huh. Sure, why not.

"That's good D0G-san," says Ako, "Everybody should have friends."

D-O-E-S A-K-O H-A-V-E F-R-I-E-N-D-S

Bwreep?

Ako nods.

"Most of them don't come here," she says, "They're at home, but I have some here too."

W-I-L-L A-K-O B-E D-0-G-'-S F-R-I-E-N-D

Oh dear.

"I, um, you're," says Ako, "You're very big D0G and that scares me sometime."

A lot of times.

"That makes it hard."

D0G's head sags. Mwoooo... he says mournfully.

How does something that size manage to look at all pathetic?

"Don't be sad D0G," says Ako, "Just, be careful all right? When we switched I broke a lot of things by accident and..."

How to put this?

"I'm kind of nervous to begin with."

D0G nods.

He takes a step toward Ako and tentatively extends a hand as if for a handshake.

...Right. Western robot. At some point Ako is going to have to teach D0G about bowing.

Ako reaches out, gingerly, for the handshake.

It might not be a beautiful handshake, but it's something.

D0G takes Ako's hand between thumb and forefinger and gives it a delicate shake.

He can be gentle, when called upon to do so.

Which is good!

"I don't know what to do next with you D0G-san."

P-L-A-Y F-E-T-C-H, suggests D0G with a hopeful Bweeoop?

Might as well run this all the way to the end.

"With what?"

D0G holds up one finger in a 'hold on a second' gesture, and lumbers over to the door.

He returns a few minutes later holding a plastic sphere about the size of a volleyball.

Ako's finished packing the cards up by the time D0G gets back. Maybe solitaire would work better next time.

"I don't know that I can throw that well enough to make it a good chase," says Ako.

With hands out: "Can I see how it feels?"

D0G nods and holds out the ball so Ako can take it. It's lighter than you'd figure, but there is still some heft to it.

Ako bounces it a couple of times in both hands. Her throwing arms aren't the best, but the weight seems manageable another way.

"Let me dress up for the weather," she, "I think I can give you a few rounds."

Rrrp mweep! D0G does an excited little dance in anticipation.

When Ako heads outside it's with a hoodie on top of her regular clothes.

D0G's ball gets tossed up and kicked solidly away.

Don't try this at home folks, Ako is from a martial arts/action sequence friendly universe.

And D0G goes galloping off after it.

KATHUNK KATHUNK KATHUNK KATHUNK

The part where D0G runs away is almost relaxing. Hopefully D0G will slow down a little on the way back once he's closer to Ako. He's still pretty big.

When it is returned, the ball will be taken and kicked again, away from the burn circle or the other marked places.

And off he goes again!

This could go on for a while.

It is probably better than making card houses all afternoon.

Or trying to get D0G to make them either.
