The crew of the Borealis rescued an enormous number of people from the Combine geneworm, and distributed many (if not most) of them back to the areas they wanted to return to. Some of them stayed, to work with the specific Resistance group that had saved them or to seek opportunities elsewhere of which they were yet unaware.
One of them, a woman from Ecuador, stayed because after sixteen years of Combine rule, she finally had the opportunity to put her old skills to use. Specifically, to put them to use in the Borealis' galley, as there had been no room in a Combine-dominated Earth for the sous-chef of the finest restaurant in the city of Quito.
It's all well and good in theory but in practice it means that dinner's gonna be an hour or so late today, since Ms. Soliz is turning the place upside down. Gordon figured he'd creep out to Milliways to get something to eat in the meantime. His miniature pizza (he hasn't had pizza in longer than he can remember) arrives with a fortune cookie for no reason that he can discern; shrugging, he cracks it open.
Life is a verb.
"... uh huh."

He holds up the 'life is a verb' slip of paper for inspection.
"Doesn't even make sense."

Last time free food came out of nowhere, there was... weirdness to follow.

He can read the list in one hand and work on her neck and shoulders with the other, right?
