There's a stiff breeze from the lake and the clouds and sun are playing tag, so it's not the easiest day to be riding. But neither Jim nor Rachat shy from a little hard work.

You can find Jim on the trails. Or later in the stables, and after that in the Bar, where he's a bit windburned and nursing a cup of coffee.

"Hey Jim." Guppy is at the bar, and gives him a nod when he comes in.

"Guppy." He stifles a natural instinct to call Guppy "Doctor," the outgrowth of a career built on title. "How's the medical world?"

"Busy as always." Guppy says. "Flu seems to be dying down here now, thank goodness."

"I heard there was another outbreak. Kate Barlow seemed...upset." And apparently mortified. "Any luck in finding a treatment or vaccine?"

Guppy shakes his head.

"It mutates." he says. "There isn't currently a vaccine for all types of flu, and treatment only shortens it by a couple of days. The main problem is everyone gets so confused that they don't stay upstairs not infecting people."

Jim gives a small exhale. "I wish I could provide you with the vaccine we use in my time. It's not universally effective, but it comes very close. As do most of the antivirals.

"Though in the end, all it takes is a broken quarantine and a new strain to undo any planning." And the flu here, from what he's seen, pales in comparison with many diseases he's encountered.

"The flu here is unusual, in that it carries a psychotic element." Guppy says. "Other than that, most people don't become that sick."

"And I would guess that there is no immunity from previous years."

"Well I've had it twice now." Guppy says. "So looks like there isn't. But I was exposed to quite a lot of people before I finally got it, so maybe it's possible to develop some resistance."

"You do all you can to maintain a sterile field, I would assume, but it's a historical fact that doctors are always most at risk." Though Bones seemed to never, ever get sick.

"Yeah. I think next year we'll have to get Security to cell people." Guppy says.

"You might consider increasing protocols for security staff. Or recruiting more non-humans." He's seen more of late, though not nearly enough to fit the scope of the galaxy.

"There's not been many new medics here." Guppy says. "I've recruited Enzo as support staff, but he's just a lad, I'd really only ask him to keep an eye on people."

In the bar, Pavel is sitting with a paper notebook and pencil, working out an equation for gravitational computation in long-hand writing. His penmanship is impeccable, but even his English letters are a little slanted and carry the effects of only knowing Cyrillic.

"Mister Chekov...doing classwork the ways of the ancients? Or it is a class in pre-modern technology?" Jim has no problem with paper and pencil, being a collector of paper books. But it is curious.

"It sometimes helps me to write zese things out," he explains. "Is a vay of helping to remember ze eqvations."

Beat.

"I ran ze marathon."

"How did you do?" He seems young to run it. But he does have more of a runner's body than Jim does.

Pavel smiles brightly.

"I placed first," he says definitively. "Ze youngest cadet to do so."

Wow. Jim grabs the cadet's right hand to shake it vigorously. "That is quite impressive. I only managed sixteenth the first time I tried.

"And your counterpart in my world...I don't know if he even ran the marathon." Strange, the little differences between timelines.

"I hawe been a runner since I vas a child," he explains. "Zat, and ze ballet." (The narration is fairly sure that one's a difference from the prime timeline, as well.)

"But zank you. Is wery strange zat now eweryone knows who I am, because of zis."

"It will pass. There will be another marathon, and another winner. And before that, all sorts of events that drawing the attention of the cadets. Take it from me, fame is fleeting." Fame at that level, at least.

"I do not mind not being famous," he says easily. "It is not vhat I entered Starfleet for."

"No, no one enters the fleet for that. Though it sometimes happens." As Kirk can attest to. "Either way, it doesn't matter what others think of your accomplishment."

Pavel will be learning that soon. "Some, it does. Vhat people say, or think, can be wery important. Especially is zey are in ze Admiralty."

Pavel hadn't run the race to impress them, and he didn't fly through his classes for that reason either, but the notion was always in the back of his mind. "How hawe you been?"

"The admiralty can take care of itself." It rarely takes care of much else, some might add.

"I've been well. Heading back to Earth for a presidential inauguration. And don't ask me the name of the new president, just in case your timeline eventually chooses him." The mun notes that Pavel should not feel bad in not knowing since canon never actually names him.
