As Cubefall Ebbs Away

It's been interesting being this big, thinks Charlie as he sits on a rock outside, watching the sun set. And more interesting to have the altered senses of a Bolovaxian. The air smells different, the sky seems a new shade of blue, he can hear conversations inside with ease. At the same time, food tastes wrong and his sense of balance is off. So he won't mind reverting to his usual human self.

Still, it is nice to see life through new eyes. And he would be glad to share his insights if you ask.

Arcade hadn't meant to come to Milliways. He seldom does, unless things are really rank at Mick and Ralph's when he goes shopping. So you can imagine how Cubefall strikes the man when he walks in; Arcade just keeps right on walking to out back. At least he's seen green things somewhere in his life. The construction toys? Hah, no-

"Hello." The voice is not nearly as gruff as it ought to be.

"A-heh," says Arcade intelligently. "Uh. Hi there. Didn't see you there when I came out here."

"I guess my cunning stealth skills are intact even in this body." Or the man was really distracted.

Guess who walked right past his vid screens. Go on.

"It's Cubefall. Last day of the holiday." Pause. "Have you heard of it?"

"Honestly? Can't say that I have, no," says Arcade. "Should I have? The bar looked kinda..." He waves one hand in midair. "You don't see that kind of radical redecoration back home."

"The holiday is non-Terran in origin. A species of self-aware robots celebrates it, usually by taking on new forms. The Bar just carries a bit further and offers it to all sentients." Freedom of choice is the right of all sentient beings, after all. "I'm usually human."

"Huh," says Arcade. "Self-aware robots? Like in the old Ras Bastion movies?"

"I don't know those films. But my time has some sentient robots. I could have been one for Cubefall. It didn't appeal to me." He likes being alive (more or less).

"I can understand that. Doesn't seem like it'd be all that entertaining," says Arcade. "Does this kind of thing seriously happen often around here?"

"Cubefall is annual, but there are some days when the Bar decides people need a change. Halloween, April Fool's Day, and Mardi Gras." He doesn't care for them much, but doesn't rail about it, either.
