For a soldier in wartime - especially an officer - a certain amount of moral ambiguity comes with the territory. There are times when you can't do the right thing because the only options available to you are wrong things, and the best you can do is pick the lesser of two evils. There's no reason not to be polite. And anyway, Ellen's never been entirely clear on the concept of 'pet'; she still thinks of Dogmeat as an inconveniently non-verbal person.
