Not breakfast!

If you're human, it would almost be breakfast time.

Lady Margolotta is a vampire, so she's having a nice cup of cocoa before retiring for the day, and maybe an Überwaldean pastry or two.

If someone is curious, she has enough to share.

If someone is curious, human, and it's breakfast time for them, she'll even get them tea and coffee.

The pastries have funny names, like Pigs' Ears and Apple Pouches and Windbags and Schmaltzbergers and Morporkians.

Lady Margolotta will explain about those when asked.-

"Good morning." Charlie is just back from a nice long jog, and looks it.

[margolotta]

Margolotta is amused. "Good morning!" she says. "You look as if you needed some breakfast, my dear. You probably like things with whole grains and sprouts and fruit, though?"

Überwaldean pastries are mostly white flour and sugar and fat. Old-fashioned food, to satisfy hard-working people on their afternoon break before the last leg of the day's duties.

"Right in one." The pastries look like the sort of thing he used to devour when he was young and poorly trained and mooched off the pastry cart at KBEL.

"I think what you need," Margolotta says, "is a muesli bar with fresh fruit on top. And some tea?"

"Herbal. Thanks.

"Are you bartending today?" She's being really friendly. Which makes him a little suspicious for some reason.

[margolotta]

Margolotta laughs. "Oh now," she says. "I'm just having my early morning snack before retiring for the day. I thought I'd share."

She finds a pastry with whole grains and nuts and raisins in, sweetened with honey and covered in fresh strawberries and pieces of peach, stuck on with some kind of gluey honey icing. And pours him a cup of herbal tea. The cup is white and blue, in what the Überwaldeans know as 'onion pattern', even though the 'onion' originally was a pomegranate.

"You're telling me that is actually healthy?" The icing alone would give him a sugar rush.

"Can I ask where you're from? That's an interesting accent."

"I'm from Bonk," she says, guilelessly. "That's in Überwald, on the Disc. And yes, that's the healthy option, with lots of fibre and fresh stuff and honey."

"The Disc...that's some sort of space station?" Remarkably, Charlie has never met anyone from the Disc in all the time he's been in the Bar. "And your town is really called Bonk."

"Yes, it is," she says. "It's pronounced more like 'Be-yonk', if you listen closely."

Very closely.

"And the Disc is not a station, it's a flat world on the backs of four elephants, which is in turn carried through space on the back of a giant space turtle. Originally, there were five elephants, but one had an accident, which my home region traditionally owes its wealth to. People from other worlds find that all very strange."

He just stares for a moment. "There's a legend - or maybe a belief, depending on how you ask - that the world is flat and on the back of an elephant on the back of a turtle." He even knows the quip quoted by Stephen Hawking that it's really turtles all the way down. "You're saying it's the reality on your world." He does not believe it.

"Yes, definitely," she says.

She thinks for a moment.

Then, she gets her knitting out from her pompadour bag. The needles are a rich ivory colour, with nicely decorated knobs on the non-pointy end.

"These were a gift from a minor dwarf king, made from a bit of tusk from the Fifth Elephant that he'd found a tip of in his mine. It's fossilised ivory that they work almost like stone. Pretty, aren't they?"

"And real." Dwarf king? "I get the feeling your world is an outlier in the spectrum of planets. And that an astronomer would have a field day." Or being horribly confused.

"How do you mind ivory? Like any other mineral?"

This morning, Moist took Franz out for his walk as there was a smell in the air that he wanted to pin down.

He wasn't able to find it but he enjoyed being out in the early morning and when he walks by Lady Margolotta, he does recognize the smells.

He nods to her and smiles, "I had no idea you enjoyed pastry so much, Lady Margolotta."

"Good morning," she says, smiling at him brightly.

He approaches her on his own! That is a first.

"Help yourself to some pig-ears and windbags, my dear. Coffee? That dog is adorable. I like the little black spots around his nose. Is he from our world?"

She was simply along his path and it would be rude not to acknowledge her and Crassus got him thinking about Uberwald.

Franz sits down and gives her a cautious sniff, she smells strange and his human is nervous about her,

"This is Franz and yes, he is. I wouldn't wish to disturb you."

"Oh, you're not disturbing me," Margolotta says. She pours some coffee for Moist, and puts some pastries on a small plate for him.

"Franz is a very nice dog. He looks a bit like those mountain rescue dogs, just with shorter fur. I was just having a snack before retiring for the day and decided to share."

She sips her cocoa.

"Yes, he is rather like them. I'm not sure what else he's mixed with but he's obedient and intelligent. Did you know there's a young guard from Bonk here, named Crassus?"

He wants to get more information and she'll have it so he sits down and Franz moves beside him, Moist keeps one hand on Franz's shoulder to reassure him.

"I think I know him," Margolotta says, smiling. She holds out her hand for Franz to sniff, and then carefully pats the dog's solid head. "Did you get on well with him?"

"Yes, he seemed rather forward thinking and gave me some ideas,"

Investing in governments is one of those things that looks good.

[margolotta]

"Oh yes, we try to work with forward thinking and creative people wherever we can," Margolotta says.

"He seemed like a wonderful find. I hope to hear that he's moving up in the world."

[margolotta]

Margolotta smiles, delighted. "Are you suggesting he deserves a promotion?" she asks.

Moist von Lipwig is taking an interest in affairs back home. That is a first!

Pity she can't use the 'Crassus' shape at will.

"I never got his rank so perhaps. He just gave me some ideas for investments,"

And if Crassus has more money than Moist can help him with it.

[margolotta]

"I don't know if that is a good think," Margolotta chuckles. "But yes, we need clever heads with ideas for money as well as the more idealistic types."
