There was so much to be done but it was agreed that a small rest would make sense. Not a full night's sleep but some time in a proper bed. Sam's leg was hurting again as he opened the door to his room in the Abhorsen's House and found Milliways staring back at him.

Quickly he steps through for fear it won't be there again, the last time he was here feels a lifetime ago and the weight of the Milliways' Dead is strange. He walks towards fire with a small limp as the lights reflect off his new surcoat of the gold royal towers crossed with the Wallmaker's silver trowel.

Once he sits down, he ends up staring into the fire and trying to get his thoughts in order but he's not sure it will work any better here than at the Abhorsen's House.

"I could have, but there were more important things at risk than your feelings," he smiles, helpfully.

Sam rubs his face, he doesn't remember the last time he slept properly,

"I've never known a time when they were important."

"And yet at your age you're still whining about how no one will treat them as though they were," Yrael says, sighing. His tone takes on a frank and straightforward tone.

"You never knew the Wallmakers, Princeling. Your mother never knew them. Your father, neither, despite the duration of his time as a block of wood. The Wallmakers were just as much servants of the Charter as the Abhorsen's line, or the Royal family, or the Clayr in their glacier. Moreso, perhaps, as the Wallmakers' work delved most deeply in the Charter itself. You are the first to wear their sigil in many centuries, and will be remembered by history as such. So best straighten your spine and give future Wallmakers something to be proud of, Wallmaker Sameth."

Mogget's the only one who has known them and hearing that explanation helps, it doesn't answer most of his questions but its a beginning,

"How can I learn how to be a good Wallmaker? Where do I start looking when there's time?"

Yrael smiles, and perhaps it is not so mocking. "Look at their works, Sameth. Every craftsman puts part of himself into his work. You can still find them in the things they made."

...Three and Five became stone and mortar...

"Spend some time with the Great Charter Stones, or walk along the Wall some day. Pay attention to them and what they might have to show you, and you will learn something of what it means to be a Wallmaker."

Sam relaxes and allows himself a small smile, its a pleasanter way of reading those words and one that makes sense,

"I will and we'll find a way to stop the Destroyer."

"Yes, you will." Yrael tilts his head at him.

"And before you even try it - because you might still try, I was there - I will tell you: you will be going with Lirael when she leaves the Abhorsen's House. Do not make the mistake of thinking your responsibility to see this through ends because you are no longer Abhorsen-in-Waiting."

"I know that and I said I would. We've already talked about this."

Yrael laughs. "Good to see I'm doing my job well, back then."

He's so happy to be currently unemployed.

Besides, had Sameth still tried it, Yrael would have dragged the boy to Teja and forced Sameth to explain just how much of a coward he is to the Goth.

Sam doesn't want to explain to anyone all the stupid things he's done in the past few weeks. He'll tell Kait but not Teja,

"Yes, you are."
