William enters the Bar limping as he slipped on some ice and his knee is hurting again.

There was some other stuff going on that he's not ready to think about just yet like the conversation with his teacher, but for now he'll sit down.

It takes him longer than he'd like to get to the counter and Bar provides him with an ice pack and some hot chocolate along with some leftover holiday cookies. This isn't how he wanted the year to start.

"Is it bad? Your knee?"

"Hey, Ako, it ain't too bad just slipped on some ice."

"Hi William-san. Try switching between a hot water bottle and the ice. It can help with the circulation."

Bar helpfully provides a hot water bottle, "Oh yeah, didn't know that."

"You don't really have a reason too," says Ako, "I've had a lot of boys with banged knees though. How have you been other than that?"

"Not too bad, had a good holiday. How about you?"

He switches the ice with the hot water bottle and smiles, it does help.

"All right. I got a new trick."

Ako smiles and pops a brightly colored water pistol in and out of existence from her hand.

"How'd you do that?"

"It's part of the kind of storage system that Karkat-san and the other trolls use," explains Ako, "I can only do that with pistols, but I can do it with any pistol I put into storage."

"Oh, that must be useful."

"I hope it doesn't turn out to be too useful," says Ako, "Needing to shoot that much wouldn't be good."

"No, why'd you choose a pistol to put in it?"

He doesn't think of Ako as that violent.

"I bought an alien pistol from Ellen-san once after I got a bad scare here."

Jim hears William's slow, labored footsteps approaching and looks up.

"You alright, kid?"

William tries for a smile but it turns into a grimace,

"It ain't too bad. Twisted my knee a bit back and fell on it again."

"Well, I'd offer some kind of remedy, but I can only think of one. And it's the same one I've used to deal entirely too many of my problems."

"Whiskey? She'd rather I take the pain pills than drink,"

There's a glass of water by pills for William.

"That's the one," Jim says. "Though at least I've never thought to combine the two."

"I don't think these are anything like morphine so probably ain't too bad. Though there are some docs here who'll give you that sort of stuff if you need it. I try not to,"

Though he did need them when he came in after he first hurt his knee but he tries not to think too much about that.

"I should hope not. Not the sort of thing anybody should be looking to get without needing it." Jim frowns.

"No, best to stay clear of trouble as much as you can."

"Right," Jim says. "Only ever needed morphine once or twice, myself, but..."

He swallows. "You don't want to get too carried away with anything like that. Once it sucks you in it can take a lot of years away from a man."

"Yeah, though you'll hear the same of alcohol,"

And some times people need their pain taken care of, he's seen his brother coughing blood and his father learning to walk again with all the pain it brought.
