Lorelai looks very sad to hear this, but does a valiant job of trying to hide it. Still, for a moment she finds it hard to swallow.

"D-Do you try and talk to him?"

" Yeah, but not much ever really happens, he still gets me coffee and food. "

She shrugs, though inside she decides that maybe Luke would be the one to spill the beans to her about what happened.

Lorelai really should let this go since she isn't willing to offer up any more information. But, Rory's broached the Unspeakable Subject, and now she wants details.

"So, he's nice to you right? He's not being rude to you?"

" Of course, Luke's nice to me. Never any ruder than he ever has been. Gosh, mom, you make him sound like he'd gone over to the dark side. "

"I just want to make sure he's okay, and that he's not treating you differently just because we aren't speaking to each other."

She looks down at her hands. "He really loves you, you know." Us. "I don't want to take that away from you."

She smiles and nods.

" I know, and from the looks of things it hasn't changed anything. But you should probably do something about your end of that circle. "

The unspoken was 'because I know he loves you too, and he's been more sad than grumpy lately. '

"Hon, if it were that simple don't you think I'd have done it already?"

She has a lot of unspokens. I don't want him to hurt, I hate that I hurt him, but I can't see the look in his eyes, Now there's Indy, and I just don't know what to do. . .

" No, because that's how you work. And you need to do it. It's called closure, besides you can't keep gettting your coffee at the Al's Pancake house. Ick. "

Lorelai is just a bit irked at her daughter's prodding, and for one of the only times in Rory's life, she shows it. "Rory, what. Do. You. Want. Me. To. Do? There is nothing left for us to say. Maybe if we hadn't been friends before we could manage it now, but you can't go back to that, and you above all others should know that."

She takes an angry sip of her drink, and now she's angry at herself for saying those things to her daughter.

Speechless...because, well, her mom was right.

She shakes her head to dispel the tears welling up in her eyes. "I'm sorry." She sighs and rests her forehead on her hands.

" No one ever does, Mom. We just can't help being human I guess."

She smiles at her daughter. "I hate that. It toally ruins any illusions I have about myself."

There really is little humor in her joke.

"Look, Hon, it was probably a mistake to get involved with Luke. No, it was a mistake. It was a very selfish mistake on my part and it's ruined a very good part of my life. and if there was a way that I could fix it and make it like it was before, than I would." She snaps her finegrs. "Like that. And if you can figure out the answer in the smart head of yours, you tell me what to do and I'll do it. But talking to Luke. . .now. . .isn't an option."

She nods.

" Alright, just as long as there is a possibility of a later option. "

She concedes this argument to her mother with a salute from her glass and then a large swallow.

"So. . ." She takes a deep breath and smiles. "How're things with the Weasleys?"

She smiles, loving the easy change of subject.

"Good, though when George saw Hyde a couple days ago, things weren't pretty. "

She makes a "yikes" face in understanding. "I take it he was his usual classy self?"

" Apparently. Though George did start it. Sorta. "

"Hmm, already got them fighting over you?" She points to her and nods. "You're good. You're very good."

" Hyde wasn't so much fighting as being sullen, but that is normal for him, I think. "

She chooses not to comment on the other part of that remark.

She nods. She doesn't really like the idea of Rory and Hyde bonding, but she has to admit she likes him better than Jess. And married Dean.

"He's not such a bad guy," she admits cautiously.

" Mom, " she repeats her litany from her conversation with Indy.
" One, he's thirty years behind me in social behavior. Two, he's only been an ass to me so how would I know. and three, he's just weird. "

She rolls her eyes. "Hon, I'm not telling you to date him. In fact, I'm telling you not to date him. Okay? But the thing I've noticed about Hyde is he's all talk unless you challenge him to get real for a moment, and then he sort of surprises you." She shrugs. "Not your normal type of friend, I know, but I think there's probably a decent guy in there. . .somewhere."

She snorts.

" Underneath all that hair? "

She snickers. "You may have to really look deep inside. . ."

She sips her drink and shrugs, teasing. "I kinda like the hair. And the look. Don'tcha think he's even slightly sexy?"
