David enters the bar for the first time in days.

He carries a book and a cup of coffee, bearing the caption, "Kiss the Librarian."

He settles himself into a couch at the fire, and begins to read.

A pair of arms wrap themselves around his neck from behind.

He tips his head back as the arms wrap around him, and he smiles.

"Good morning, Echo," he says, grinning and giving her a kiss on the chin. "How are you?"

Echo smiles. I'm good, now that... no, stop it, Echo.

She smiles brighter, hoping he didn't hear that. "...you?..."

David, being the gentleman he is, pretends he didn't hear it.

"I'm good. Nice, relaxing times in New Orleans. Missed me?" he asks with a cheeky grin, knowing the answer before she even answers. "Come on, sit down."

Echo nods, blushing a little. She hops over the back of the couch and sits down next to him. She snuggles into his side, but not as much as usual.

How was New Orleans? I wish I could have come.

He sets the cup down on the floor, and wraps an arm around her, kissing her hair. "It's perfect. Just what I need."

He smiles. "I told you; you're welcome anytime. Just ask Richard. He'll bring you."

It'd be nice to get to see you more often.

She blushes a little bit more.

"Nonsense," he says, if a little awkwardly. "If you need to see me, you'll see me. And I do like having friends."

If one would care to notice, there's a hint of a blush on his cheeks.

"Anyway!" he says with a flourish. "How have you been keeping yourself busy? Have people been good to you?"

Echo nods, smiling. They've been good. Oh! I have socks!

She holds up her feet, showing off the socks that match her hair.

He laughs as he looks at her socks. "They're nice socks, and they match your hair!" he says. "Who gave you those? I'd quite like a pair of them myself."

He lifts his trouser leg to show off a pair of boring black socks. "And I suppose I need to get my hair done, too?"

Charlie, even more bed-heady than usual, comes downstairs and flops onto the couch opposite David. "Hey, you," he says and yawns.

He smiles lazily at Charlie. "Hey you," he replies, placing the coffee cup down. "How're you?"

"Good." He nods. "Very good." He leans forward and peers at David. "And you? Drinking coffee, I see."

"Americans have no decent tea," he explains. "Coffee's a halfway decent substitute."

He shows him the mug, and smiles.

"I gues I ought to just come out and ask: are you still mortal or did you let Lestat Turn you? I'm guessing from the coffee you're still mortal."

"What makes you think I'd have Turned?" he asks curiously.

"Because when I open the front door I can go back to the island. And the letter from the Landlord said things had to be set right--and I don't know what's been set right. I'm trying to figure that out.

"So you're still mortal." He exhales. "That was my main theory."

"I am," he answers. "Not... not quite ready yet."

He sighs.

"But I'm glad you can go back to your island."

"Thanks," Charlie says quietly. "I'll be going in a few days. I'm not planning to say big goodbyes or anything--just go when I'm ready. So . . . this is a warning, I guess. I'll be gone for a bit."

He nods. "Any idea how long? I don't want to worry unnecessarily."

"Not long, I hope. David . . . I have a bit of a worry that the bar won't let me back in. So . . . if I'm not back soon, it's not my choice.
