When Alyx comes into Milliways today, she is presented with a large rucksack with a note pinned to it.

Alyx reads the note, and takes out the--okay, no she doesn't, the device itself is way too heavy to pull out of the bag without help. Instead, she fishes around until she finds the holo-reader, and starts the laborious process of reading the extremely dry operations manual.

She's probably gonna be here for a while.

It's sometime into Alyx's reading that Kaidan gets his part of Shepard's instructions, and the woman soon gets a biotic joining her at her side.

"I hear you're looking for a tutor?"

"Oh! Hi, Kaidan," says Alyx. "Yeah, I could use some help. You can only get so much out of an instruction manual, y'know?"

Normally, Alyx would learn how to run the machine by simply trying it out, but the tech is advanced enough that she doesn't want to risk damaging it by mistake. (It doesn't help that she's borrowing it rather than owning it outright.)

He grins.

"Then how about a little hands-on work. Do you need help moving it?"

"Yes, please," says Alyx vehemently. "I can't even lift it off the table."

A nod, and Kaidan heaves the pack up and off the Bar counter.

"Where do you want to sit and try this out?"

"Someplace close to the restrooms. I'm gonna need bathroom breaks."

"Sure thing," he says, and it takes just a few moments to scout out an ideal place, leading the two of them in that direction. "I honestly can't remember if I've said as much yet or not, but congratulations."

"I'm not sure either," Alyx admits. "It's been a crazy few months. --oh, and thanks."

"Crazy all around, I think," he agrees, setting down the pack and unpacking it's contents. "Do you know what gender it's going to be?"

"Both. Fraternal twins."

Another grin.

"That's great. Now, do you have an idea on how to start things up?"

"Well, it's all connected up, so... I hit this button here, right?"

"Yes. Now, don't forget the feedback gloves, so you can interface with the holo-projection."

"Right." Alyx tugs the gloves on and thumbs the 'On' button.

The holographic display flickers to life as Kaidan watches.

"Good, now, did you want to try things out? I'll be right here if you need to ask questions."

Alyx frowns thoughtfully at the set of holographic buttons and windows in front of her. Also at the floating abstract sphere-y thing floating above the windows, which almost seems to be waiting expectantly.

"Hm. So there's a 'scan for active systems' option here, is that what I'm looking for?"

"Ye-"

"Active systems found. Shall I list them for you?"

Alyx is startled, but only for a moment. "Yes, please."

"Listing them now."

With that, another display comes to life, listing first Kaidan's omnitool, then going on to list laptops and game systems and messaging devices in the area.

"As you can see, the VI recognizes voice commands."

Alyx nods. "Nice. And it'll link up to anything?"

A nod.

"It's designed to analyze and infiltrate unfamiliar software systems. It should do the trick for you."

"What kind of range does it have?"

"My maximum range is two point seven five kilometers," chirps the VI helpfully.

"The connection is stronger the closer you are, though."

Not a lot, but better than nothing. "Is it possible to boost that range?"

"A little," he says. "Nothing too spectacular, though. This was meant to be used while infiltrating so it's usually used while the infiltrator is close."

"Damn," mutters Alyx. "That doesn't give us much room for remote reconnaissance..."

"It's really meant for use as you're infiltrating the area, rather than something to be used from, say, all the way across the city. Can you imagine how many signals it would pick up, then?"

"...okay, point. Could it be locked into a remote receiver?"

He makes a soft, pondering noise.

"It's possible," he says finally. "It'd take some doing, though, and it's also a matter of compatible technology as well."

Alyx's eyes light up. A challenge!

"Does the manual have specs for that?"

Kaidan grins in response.

"I'm pretty sure it does."

Alyx can't help but grin as she pulls out the manual again. She has a Project!
