Charles has been taking advantage of the fact that time stops in Milliways to do work and learn more about the people who pass through here. There's such a variety to the minds and experiences that if he didn't have to finish his editing, he'd probably spend most of his time with his eyes closed and just listening.

As it is, one of his sections isn't going as he'd like and he keeps going back over a certain sentence until he's quite lost track of time.

When he finally gets it right, he looks up and realizes that took a while and allows himself a break, so he leans back in his chair and observes the Bar.

OOC: If you approach him while he's working then he's not mentally listening except quite passively. After he's stopped working, he is actively listening to the conversations and minds around him. Feel free to interrupt him or wait until he's on a break. Please let me know what he'll encounter in your pup's mind. Thank you.

"They trust you to?"

Their futures aren't the same but he finds that an amazing possibility.

X looks startled.

Again.

"Trust is not relevant. It is what I do."

"Do they know you're protecting them?"

Maybe he's missed a step here.

"Yes."

There is a flickering look of confusion on her face.

"You think they should stop me?"

"No, I'm glad they're not. It's nice to know you can and they appreciate it. It's best that we all can work together,"

He's just trying to figure out where things stand between mutants and humans in her time.

"They like not being dead," X says, after a moment of consideration.

"And some of them are my friends."

Beat.

"Some of them like us, too."

Here she hesitates.

"But people always want to kill us. Some of them. I do not know if it will ever stop."

He smiles and shakes his head,

"That all makes quite a lot of sense. Everyone reacts in their own way and we keep finding ways to interact with them."

X hesitates.

"Some people do not want to."

Beat.

"That is okay, too."

"Which is a valid feeling. The urge to kill us is more disturbing and when either of those are acted on then it becomes a difficult situation."

X tilts her head fractionally, watching Charles with a little more weight.

"You know what that is like?"

He has ways to cope?

"I think not as well as you do as we're still in hiding in my time. People fear what they don't understand and if you can connect to them on a personal level then you go from being one of them to someone they know."

X looks a little dubious.

"My teammates were afraid of me for a very long time."

Beat.

"Some of them still are."

And they are mutants, too.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Do they care for you and trust you?"

That doesn't seem right and it comes across in Charles' face.

X shrugs, one-shouldered and quick.

She does not look uncomfortable.

Then again, she's had a lot of time to get used to it.

"I am a clone. And a weapon. And I am good at killing people."

Beat.

"I do not think discomfort is unexpected. Sometimes."

It doesn't mean she has to like it, but --

Well.

Plenty of the rest of the team likes her. It is all right.

Usually.

"That's quite wise of you,"

Though it doesn't sound like an easy situation.

Now is when X looks awkward.

"I do not understand."

This is not strictly true, but --

Wise?

It is not a descriptor she is used to hearing, and thus it is very strange.

"You seem to understand part of why they feel as they do and accept that. That's a difficult thing to do as not everyone is that willing to see the other side,"

It's something he wishes more people did.

X thinks about that for a few seconds.

Then --

"I had to learn to be a person."

Beat.

"It is different."

"It is but it seems to have served you well. I had to learn to separate my own thoughts from others and learn what's thought and what's said,"

As Raven learned to control her shape and body.

"You are not crazy," X offers, after another moment of thought.

(And of assessment.)

"That is good."

"No, I'm not," He didn't always know that but he isn't.

"I am not crazy, either."

They can be not-crazy together.

In case Charles was wondering.

"I didn't think you were," He'd be glad to be not crazy with her.

"Oh."

X looks cautiously pleased.

"Good."

Sometimes people do.

He knows what crazy looks like, part of the telepath deal, her mind doesn't seem that way,

"Yes."
