One of these days Varric is going to have to sit down with Merrill and have a few words with her about wandering around Lowtown at night. Not that he can't make the appropriate arrangements to keep things from getting out of hand, but... well, let's just say that he had other uses in mind for that money, and those favors, and...

Well, he'll talk to Merrill when he gets the chance. For now? For now he's going to sit down somewhere that isn't the Hanged Man. It's getting so a dwarf can't find a place to work on his next adventure story without some slumming numbskull noble's son bumping into his table and spilling his rat-flavored beer all over the parchment.

So long as you don't upset the inkbottle or spill or smear anything on his work, he's botherable.
