When Sallie wakes up in her apartment, Bar helpfully supplies a reminder that Cubefall has started. She takes her time - showering, dressing, eating breakfast - before heading out into the main bar and getting presented with her choices.
Choice one: A small cat, all white fur and blue eyes.
Choice two: Sallie herself, but with bird's wings.
Choice three: A four foot fall humanoid rat.
Choice three makes Sallie stare for a minute. Or five. Wondering who was listening in, in their way.
She says no for all of them and disappears back to her apartment again.

No beats are missed.

The fact that he goes ever so slightly still as he says that? Is a sure tell that he might not be 100% with the honesty.

"Do I get to ask, or should I just keep my guesses to myself?"

"Quid pro quo, Clarice."

After an inordinately long moment of silence:
"I ask you first."

He was counting on her not calling his bluff.
"Yearning for simpler times."
He follows that up with a gesture inviting her to continue.

Sallie goes for much the same, very carefully worded: "Much like your 'simpler times', that -- " pointing to the discarded vidscreen, " -- is something that is not possible."

"And here I was under the assumption that we ate the impossible for lunch."

"Gotcha."

"What's with the long face?"

It tends to eclipse things. Things like hope.

But she doesn't say anything to make it better.
And she very much doesn't agree with him.

As he does so the mental blocks around the link begin to lighten. It's different, the way things transfer and translate in his once again reptilian brain. The contrast is higher, but the sharpness is gone. Dulled, if you will.
"Maybe next year."

"It's never a good idea, dear."
