Hitting the Books Multi-pup

The recent conversation with Guppy-sensei has pointed out exactly how long Ako has been Bound. At over a year it’s time to hit the books or she’ll have no idea what class is about when she finally gets back.

Which is why she has syllabi in Japanese, a small stack of textbooks almost all in Japanese and a stack of notebooks to write in.

Of course, she’s also outside with all of this is in the grass and the sunlight on a blanket, because nice weather is a treasure.

Artemis on the other hand has a collection of internet printouts and a hardcover book on Mars being neglected to stare at the obituary for another universe’s iteration of the Justice League.

That was not the news she expected to see at the start of her summer vacation.

Robo has a stack of printouts himself, mostly rocket designs with a few jets added in for flavor. He’s going to grab so extra time to save some astronauts. It’s not like you can pull over and call triple A for tow in space.

"Excuse me. Can I see that newspaper?" Some headlines are hard to miss. And also very disturbing.

"It's from a friend's world," she says shifting the clipping around to make it more visible, "Invincible, yellow and blue costume."

Charlie studies stock photo of the team in better days. "I don't him. Or them. But they remind me of...of a lot heroes I do know." Creepy.

"Justice League back home?"

[52_dropoff]

"Yeah. Though they haven't quite had this lineup in a while. Still, it's weird." Who could kill the League at once? That just doesn't sound possible in his reality.

"I'm expecting to hear about an announcement from a giant hologram over Washington or some whirlwind of backstabbing," she admits, "I can't think about any one villain back home who could solo the League there either."

"There was a guy a while back who came close. Prometheus. But they managed to short circuit him." Though the details never public. "The only way the League ever gets slowed down is from within."

"Never heard of him," she says absently, "But as far as slowing down, this looks like a convincing case of being stopped."

She rubs at a drink ring on the table top with a thumb for a moment.

"It's going to be nuts over there for months. Maybe years."

"When our League falls apart, it takes months for it to reform. So certainly here it would probably be worse, unless there's some sort of governmental push." Which is a short term fix at best.

"Forget the League, all these heroes had territory they looked after, regular opposition they went up against... At least their Superman counterpart is still up and running."

And never a member of the Guardians.

"Yeah, there is that. When our heroes died, there was usually someone in the wings to take over.

"I made sure of that in my case, in fact." No reason to hide that. "Not that I had either territory or much in the way of enemies."

That gets a bit of a sideways look. There are an awful lot of heroes here.

"I guess we'll get to see who steps up," she allows, "But it's going to be rough until everything settles."

"I'm Charlie, by the way. Once called the Question." In case the name rings any bells. He doubts it will.

"It doesn't ring any bells," she admits, "I'm Artemis. Where's Gotham for you?"

[52_dropoff]

"Didn't think it would. I never made any real headlines. So even if we're from the same timeline...

"Gotham's on the east coast, not far from Metropolis and New York." It's too crowded in that neck of the woods.

"Sounds about right," says Artemis, "It's one of the things I'm keeping track of, a little. First night here I met a Lois Lane who said it was in Kansas. Same for Metropolis. I have no idea what happened to their geography."

He blinks at that. "I'm from the midwest. Hub City. And I can't imagine what Gotham or Metropolis would be like if you moved them there.

"Where are you from?"

"Gotham. Home of the most consistently creep architecture in the lower forty eight."

And the Bat, but there was a Gotham before there was a Batman and the architecture was still kind of nuts.

"Try it from the rooftops looking down.

"Though it's changed since the quake." Not for the better, mind you.

"That hasn't happened for me, the quake. If it's supposed to have happened pre-2010, it's safe to say different universes."

[52_dropoff]

"Then not the same universe. And with any luck, the quake won't happen for you. It was pretty miserable. Even by Gotham standards." Like that whole "no man's land" thing.

[thenewblack]

"Awesome. I guess it's time to top up the emergency kit anyway. It hasn't been looked at since Dad left town."

[52_dropoff]

"Gotham's one place that kit should be ready. Though I don't imagine you have anti-Joker toxin, do you?" There would be a big market for it.

[thenewblack]

"No one is selling anything commercially," she says, "Last I heard was that he had too many variations to cover all of them at an affordable price."

[52_dropoff]

"I never even heard that. But it's nice to know someone's thinking about it.

"Other than that, do you like Gotham?"
