"You know," says Ellen from a nearby table, "I've seen some pictures of uniforms very much like that in some of the older parts of our archives. They used to dress not unlike that for War Department headquarters duty. Hi, Steve."
She herself is wearing a strategically reinforced blue and gold jumpsuit, as she tore her Brotherhood fatigues today and is working on sewing them back up as invisibly as possible. Dogmeat is stretched out under her table, gnawing on an oversized bone of some kind.
"In movie theaters," he says with a nod, joining her at her table. He reaches under the table to scratch between Dogmeat's ears. "It'll be shown between the cartoon and the main feature."
"That's when they used to have the newsreel, before the War," Ellen says. "We had a couple of actual films in the Vault that were arranged like that. What do they have you doing in this one?"
"You've got theme music, too?" Ellen says. "Wow. I wonder if Three Dog ever thought of adding that to his news broadcasts back home. He's got a radio.station, one of two in the Wastes."
"...you know, I don't think even the radio show about Herbert 'Daring' Dashwood has its own song," Ellen says after some thought. "They're really serious about getting you to stick in people's minds, huh."
Steve laughs and turns so he can lean his forehead against Orpheus's chest a moment. "It sounded better in my head," he tells Orpheus's shirt. "It sounded flirtatious."
It takes her a minute to stop staring--she'd apologize, but why? Half the bar is doing the same, she's just less subtle about it. She's quick, however, with the twist of a quirky smile that almost hides the black eye she's sporting. (Only, y'know, not really.)
"A loudmouth jerk with a thing for taking potshots at mutants?" she says, doing her best not to pull violently away from his hands, though she does lean ever so slightly back.
"It's just a black eye. I promise I've had worse and it's okay, it's been checked out." She thinks being shot was worse, anyway. And it's only a tiny lie about being checked out. She was in the medlab, and McCoy was there too, they just didn't happen to run into each other. Yeah. That's it.
"He got decked by a five-foot-seven Japanese chick with blue hair."
It's not that she doesn't want to talk about about it, but there's not much to tell. He mouthed off, she mouthed back, he hit her and she put him on the ground missing a couple teeth. "It happens. I'm glad it's just a black eye and not something worse, but it happens to mutants a whole lot."

"My first serial debuted today," he says. "I thought I should dress up for the occasion."

Well, he's been doing traveling shows, right? Maybe they're ... wait, no, they didn't have television in 1942, did they? Not really, anyway.
"Or in movie theaters?"

That's...different.
Have a Noriko (blue hair in braided mohawk with beads, silver arm gauntlets, yellow and black shirt and shorts) pretty much staring at you, Steve.

Oh god, that is so surreal to say.

"Oh, my God--what happened?" He takes her chin very gently in his hand. "Are you okay? Do you need some ice?"

"I didn't know you're a mutant. You look ... normal." He winces--it's not quite the right word.
