Fury is sitting at the bar, drinking a cup of coffee.

He's reading a (paper) copy of Stranger In a Strange Land with a thoughtful frown on his face.

(Somewhere on the tab board, there is a listing for P. Irate.)

"Yeah. And I mean, at least he had female characters. Have you read Friday?"

"Can't say I have. Any good, or more of the same?" Andrew has his full attention now.

(Or it seems like he does.)

"Eh ... kind of both? I mean, more of the same in some ways but also Friday's a female protagonist and she kicks all kinds of ass. And she's like actually a believable character."

... The narration would like to take a moment to contemplate the people Andrew knows in his own real life, as regards his perception of believability.

"Maybe I'll try it. When I have the time." His expression suggests this may be 'the twelfth of never'.

He shrugs. "It's worth checking out."

Beat.

"Also, um, and belatedly: hi, I'm Andrew."

He offers a hand to shake. "Nick Fury."

The blink is fleeting, barely perceptible; there's no hesitation as he reaches for the bigger man's hand.

"Nice to meet you. Are you new here?"

OMG OMG OMG.

"I'm familiar with Milliways," Fury says. "I take it you're a regular."

"Yeah," he says, "for ... I think about five years now? Six? Ish."

"And you're not immediately, obviously insane. Good work." Fury nods.

"... to be fair, this place isn't really that much crazier than my home world? So, yeah."

Beat.

"Most of the time," he amends.

"Take your victories where you can get them," Fury advises. "Coffee breaks. Relative normality."

"Normal is boring," he says.

"... although okay, sometimes boring is a nice relaxing change."

"That's why I said relative. Most of the clowns here wouldn't recognize normal if it bought them a drink."

"Yeah?" His eyebrows go up. "So what's normal look like where you come from?"

"Most of it's classified, if that gives you an idea." Fury gives Andrew the eye.

~~Just the one?~~

"Not really," he admits. "I mean, if you were from my world, 'classified' might involve stuff like a government program to install behavior-modification biochips in vampires. Or if you were from Agent K's, it might be tracking undercover extraterrestrials. There's a lot of different kinds of weird that get classified under, uh, 'classified'."

"Yeah," Fury says. "Exactly."

His deadpan remains unparalleled.

Pause.

"So even your normal stuff is weird?" he hazards.

"I'm taking a damn coffee break in the bar at the end of the universe. You tell me."

Fury digs a couple dollars out of an inner pocket and puts them on the bar.

"... okay," he says, "fair enough."

"See you around," he says, sticking the book back in another pocket.

Fury stands, and heads for the door.

"Nice ... meeting you," he trails off, as Fury keeps moving.

Well, that could've gone worse.
