Since that strange night, Charles has been an owl. He hasn't seen anyone he knows and has been enjoying flying around outside but he wants to get back to himself. This is awkward and his feathers require a lot of work.

Today he is perched on the back of a chair with a newspaper laid out on the table and a small bowl of nuts. He refuses to eat a mouse or bird even if some of them do look tasty.

(OOC: Open all weekend. Charles will be speaking telepathically into your pup's head if he decides to talk to them. If they have mental shields, let me know, as he's sort of listening, just not as much as usual. Being an owl is distracting. Count peers out from under the trilobite tank, hoping fervently that the big bird with the sharp beak will not eat him.

Or his human will save him. His human is a great fighter, he tries telling the big bird.

Teja looks from one to the other, wondering if Charles can truly reach the cat's mind in this shape.

How useful!

I'm not going to hurt you just telling you to be thoughtful about who you attack. Would you like some fish? I could have one of the rats bring you some?

That would be a peace offering.

Count would very enthusiastically most definitely gratefully like some fish!

Charles lets a rat know and soon a cautious rat approaches Count with a dish of fresh tuna.

Counts omes out from under the trilobite tank, just as cautious, and starts nibbling the tuna.

It tastes very nice, and he is very grateful.

Which makes Charles give a gentle hoot as he thinks.

Good and be careful about who you think about attacking.

Count eats, lost in the sensation of how good the tuna tastes. Every time and again, it just tastes great!

"It seems," Teja says, "you have found an understanding with Count."

He's just following his nature.

"Which you understand," Teja says, nodding.

Yes, we are defined by both our nature and our environment combined with the choices we make.

"That holds true for men as well as cats," Teja says.

Yes, that's why I said we. Its a topic I find of great interest. What makes us into the people we are.

"Or the cats," Teja says, observing Count eat his tuna.

Count just radiates happiness and pleasure.

All of life works upon the same principles. Humanity just adds in a few more factors.

"What makes me different from him?" Teja asks. "Apart from the thumbs and from having all the things, instead of natural claws and furs?"

The added complexities of our social structures and different levels of awareness of the world. The biology is key as well, but there's no simple answer, because we are as different from each other as he is from us.

"Not all cats are the same, though," Teja says. "So if we are all different: - were do the cats stop, and the humans start? Leaving aside the fact that we can take each other's shapes, and then speak, in this place."

Charles hoots before flying over to Bar and asking her for some books on biology. This is a complex issue and he's not in his preferred shape. Bar provides a stack of books for Teja starting with Mendel and getting more complicated including Charles' dissertation.

These are questions that scientists are still wrestling with many times. I have taught classes that span a year or more on even just one of your questions. I think this books will give you a good beginning understanding.

Teja takes the books. An owl bringing books is, he thinks, strangely fitting.

"At least," he says aloud, "I am at a stage where I ask the right questions already."

There are many questions. I'm not sure if any of them are the right ones, it depends on the situation.

Charles dislikes putting value judgments on things like questions, which can be rather subjective.

"But they are questions I can start out from, learning," Teja says.

Yes, there are. These books should help you with them. Start with Mendel.

Charles adjusts his feathers with a nod before flying back over to his paper.

"Thank you!"

Teja takes the books over to the fireplace, where he sits and starts leafing through them while Count finishes his tuna.

Then, he comes and tries to sit on his human, in front of those pesky paper things, but finally settles on Teja's lap, and goes to sleep, while Teja begins reading in earnest.-
