Well.

That went better than expected.

"Hey, Bar?" says Ellen. "I feel like I should be celebrating. Could I have something with meat in it? Not- not Cram, or whatever, and not a- not a steak, it's not that big a thing, but- maybe just a hamburger? Or a, a cheeseburger, something like that? That's real food, right?"

Well, it is when Bar dispenses it. Although Ellen may need some help eating it and all the fries, as it's larger than she was expecting and Dogmeat's back on her side of the door.

There's a seat at her table, if you like.

Ellen snickers. "I don't think that'll be a problem. The other scribes should pester him enough to get him out and into the daylight every so often. If nothing else, he's still got the turrets to take care of, out among our wind turbines. Those are his babies too."

"That's good to hear," Annabelle replies with a chuckle. "Tossing things at someone gets old after a while."

Even if they DO give you hilarious deadpan looks when you hit them.

"Turrets like the ones we've run into before?" Annabelle asks.

"A couple of steps up in terms of threat level," Ellen says. "These fire lasers. The wind turbines charge the turrets' energy cells first and then the power supply for the factory, since there's no point to charging the factory if it isn't being defended. Jerald helped me bury somebody who'd been killed by the turrets once- a raider, by the look of her- because he believes in taking responsibility for what his creations do..."

"Very important, that. Not enough folks do."

Ellen nods. "Like Alfred Nobel," she says. "He told me about him- how he invented dynamite, and then ordered people to use his estate to make up for what dynamite had become, after he died. Jerald said it's important to be able to win a fight quickly, but you still have to clean up after yourself afterwards."

"He's right," Annabelle agrees. "That's what we tried to do, whenever it came down to fighting. I had trouble understanding that at first, too young and too impatient."

"I've tried to do that where I can," Ellen says. "I haven't found a lot of other people in the Brotherhood who do the same, though. Knight-Captain Colvin, maybe, but he's old enough to be my dad and then some. When I heard it from Jerald I kind of couldn't help but take an interest- especially since he was one of the Scribes who built Mjolnir, my Tesla cannon."

"Maybe he can help you bring the younger folks around," she notes. "Four hands being better than two and all of that."

"It can't hurt," Ellen says. "Maybe it'll get through to my Initiates... we'll see."
