There's a purple pony walking through Milliways today.

That, in itself, is not so unusual.

What is unusual is that she's walking on one of the rafters.

On the underside of one of the rafters.

"¡ıɹıɐW 'ıH" calls Twilight cheerfully.

"Hi, pony!" Mairi bobs up beside her, giggling. "You fly too!"

"Up!" demands Ana.

"Okay, one nano..." Enzo tries to get out his surfbaud while still holding onto the leashes.

"UP!"

"'ƃuıʎlɟ ʇou ɯ,I" says Twilight. "˙llǝds ʎʇıʌɐɹƃ ɐ ƃuısn ʇsnɾ ɯ,I"

Blank face is blank.

"Pony pony pony!"

"Okay, got it. C'mon, you." Enzo scoops up his other niece and surfs up to join them."

"¿sıɥʇ s,oɥM ˙ozuƎ 'ıH"

"Pony!"

"This is Mairi's cousin, Analog."

"No poking butts," Mairi warns Ana, because this is important.

"Butts!"

"˙ƃolɐu∀ 'ollǝH" Twilight offers a forehoof to the little sprite. "˙noʎ ʇǝǝɯ oʇ pǝsɐǝlԀ ˙ʇɥƃılıʍʇ sı ǝɯɐu ʎW"

"Hi, Tie-lie." Ana considers the hoof, then slaps it five. They're at a good angle for it.

Twilight giggles and slaps it back. When in Rome (or the pony equivalent thereof)...

Mairi is still puzzled. "You're not flying?"

"'llǝds ʎʇıʌɐɹƃ ɐ s,ʇı 'oN" repeats Twilight. "˙uʍop ɟo pɐǝʇsuı dn ǝɯ sllnd ʇı os ʎʇıʌɐɹƃ lɐuosɹǝd ʎɯ pǝsɹǝʌǝɹ I"

"She made it so she falls up instead of down," Enzo explains.

Mairi still looks a little confused. "Try jumping up and... I mean, down and up," Enzo suggests to Twilight.

Twilight does so, carefully. It's still a long way up/down to the ceiling from here.

Ohhhh! Mairi and Ana both laugh, and Mairi floats around upside-down.

"'ʇuɐʍ noʎ ɟı sʎnƃ noʎ uo ʇı ʇsɐɔ plnoɔ I" offers Twilight. "˙ʎɐʍʎuɐ ǝɔıʇɔɐɹd oʇ pǝǝu I"

"Will that work? We're made of energy, not matter. Will it make a difference?"

"˙ʎllɐnʇɔɐ 'uoıʇsǝnb pooƃ ɐ ˙˙˙s,ʇɐɥʇ"

Twilight ponders.

"˙ssɐɯ ou ǝʌɐɥ plnoɥs noʎ 'ʎƃɹǝuǝ ɟo ǝpɐɯ ǝɹ,noʎ ɟI ¿ʍou noʎ ʇɔǝɟɟɐ ʎʇıʌɐɹƃ sǝop ʍoH"

"That's a good question, too. I guess it's all part of Milliways' hardware emulation."

"¿ʍou ʇɐɥʍ sʇı˙˙˙"

"Um. You know what hardware and software means?"

"˙˙˙o-o-o-o-N"

"Machines and programs?" he suggests.

"¿ɟo ʇɹos˙˙˙"

"Okay, well, a program is something you tell a machine to do, right? So you can't have a program without a machine to run it. With computers, hardware means the machines and software means the programs. We're software. We can't exist outside hardware, but when we're here, Milliways acts like hardware for us."

Twilight is silent for a long moment, trying to comprehend this.
