Charles has spent the day in the library reading some old friends of books that he doesn't have in Washington DC as well as some new ones.

The time passed faster than he realized and when he orders a drink, he laughs before starting to go through the drink book. Tonight will be inspired by those he loves.

X's frown is slight.

"You did not think anyone could?"

"I knew that my defenses were not perfect as I'm constantly refining them, but he destroyed them,"

His defenses have always been something he works on constantly, the ease with which Slenderman ripped through them was terrifying.

X does not flinch.

But --

"I am sorry."

It's true. She is.

"You think your defenses will work better? Next time."

"They will, yes. I've made them more adaptable and stronger."

She takes another sip of her drink.

"I learned how to be a person. In Milliways."

Or maybe because of Milliways. Some of the people who most helped her shape herself are gone, now, but many of them remain.

Including X herself.

She remembers.

He nods before he answers as she as always says so much in a few words,

"Thank you for sharing that with me."

X shrugs a little, one-shouldered and quick, and just this side of awkward.

"It is not a secret."

She leans over her drink again, just for a moment.

"You are welcome."

"Yes, but something doesn't have to be hidden to not be shared. There's always a choice in what you tell another person,"

People constantly hide their thoughts and emotions, he enjoys that X doesn't, she is honest and herself.

"It is something you think about? A lot."

X is curious.

"It's something that I'm constantly aware of in terms of what is being shared and what is not. When I was a boy it bothered me and I would sometimes answer a person's thoughts rather than their words if I decided their thoughts were more truthful. It caused me a great deal of trouble until I learned that wasn't how people talked to each other. They carefully chose what they shared."

"It is important to remember," X says, expression somber.

She sounds absolutely certain about this part.

"That you are not the one that gets to decide."

"I know,"

That was why Slenderman scared him, those careful boundaries he draws between his mind and the rest of the world came apart.

"Okay."

She falls silent again, sipping at her root beer float.

Words are not always the easiest to come by.

One gets used to it.

He understands that and is happy to be silent with her until someone else needs him.
