[OOM: Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light.

...

Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes...
Tomorrow comes!

He can hear a distant song, the fading echo of drums, and there is a light that is too bright to be of the world he knows. He stumbles toward it, eventually all but falling through a doorway into...

Well, into he isn't sure where. He looks around him. Surely his comrades should be with him also, if this is indeed the afterlife the priests often spoke of. But there are no faces he recognizes, and he does not believe that the world beyond would take the form of a wine shop even if such a place did exist.

Bloodstained, tattered, smelling of gunpowder, he weaves his way toward the bar, feeling an overwhelming need to sit.

She pushed the plate of cookies over to him. "It's not the most healthy sort of food, but the sugar will give you a slight rush."

So he was dead back home, there was no need to go further with the subject unless he brought it up.

"What'd you do back home anyway?" Another person may've asked how it happened, but Sonya had been around long enough to know that some things weren't spoken about without the other person's say so.

Somehow that didn't surprise her. A lot of the men that served under her were students, in the army to pay for schooling.

"What were you studying?"

She took a bite of the cookie she was holding: it was still slightly warm and chewy.

"My dad wanted me to be a lawyer, or a doctor, but I hate paperwork and a medical doctor would mean I was off the field." Not that he wasn't flattered that she joined the army, but he did admit to her that a career as a doctor or lawyer would be safer.
