Korra was down by the lakeside, fishing.
She is still down by the lakeside, sitting on a rock, but the bubble of water swirling in her hands doesn't contain a fish.
Well, okay, to the casual observer, it probably does. A black Koi fish with a large white spot on its head. But Korra, who is the link between the material and spirit worlds, but more importantly, is a waterbender, knows viscerally that she doesn't hasn't caught a fish, but the spirit of the ocean itself.
Two questions keep bothering her. Firstly, how did La get there?
Secondly, what does she do with him now?
Naga, lying behind Korra with her head in her paws, only knows that she's not going to get to eat this one.

There's a sandy-haired ninja standing a few feet off from where Korra is sitting.

She glances over, "oh hi, Mike." And rolls backwards, lifting the swirling sphere up so he can see.
"You don't know why the Spirit of the Ocean is swimming in the lake, do you?"
no subject
"Nope, can't say that I do. Uh...why does the spirit of a salt body of water look an awful lot like a fresh water fish?"
no subject
"So he can live in a fresh water environment with his true love the Moon."
Don't ask stupid questions, Mike.
no subject
"But...why is the moon a fish at all?"
no subject
That is not the point though.
"But I don't think he's really supposed to be here, though. I think he's supposed to be in my world."
no subject
"Thaaaaat could be a problem. I mean...could that be a problem? What happens when a spirit of something leaves?"
no subject
Korra is helpful.
"And if the spirit in question is this spirit, it could end all waterbending."

It's happened before, you see.

Mike runs a hand through his already mussed hair.
"Wait...how do you know that?"

"Does that line ever really work for you? Because very rarely does anyone ever buy that from me. And tell the truth, from one quasi-omniscient being with an inherited job title to another."

Deeeeeeeeeep in thought.
She certainly doesn't look towards him straight away.

Korra doesn't look up in order to ask: "You don't know of anyone who's lost the Spirit of the Ocean, do you?"

He gives the young woman's question some thought. There are many who believe in spirits but true mysticism doesn't really exist in his reality, at least not how Korra means. "I don't believe so. Is that what you have there?"
no subject
"Yeah," she says, sounding almost sure, but not quite. "And I'm pretty sure he shouldn't be swimming in this lake."
no subject
no subject
"Yes," she says, "he's the Spirit of the Ocean. But he doesn't communicate with everyone."
This is the problem. He's supposed to communicate through her.

no subject
"Maybe. But he's the source of all waterbending. If he's not on our world, then there can't be waterbenders."

She answers quickly, without thinking. When she has, she says: "It's vital to our culture. And if we lose it, the balance of the world will be thrown off."
