Dick wasn't expecting to see the bar.

Ever again, really. He had become used to the bar being somewhere he could access through tents and doors in the circus. It was a new part of his world, sure, but it was a part of it.

Then his world collapsed in front of him and everything changed and suddenly he found himself living in an orphanage in Gotham City run by nuns.

He's had to deal with that new, horrible world, and he hates everything about it. Hates how it's not the circus, but at the same time, he's sort of pleased that he doesn't have to be at the circus, to see Mister Haly or the animals or any of his friends, and not see his parents. This new world is horrible, but because it's missing everything, it's not missing them specifically.

That's what he'd think if he was capable of coherent thought on the subject right now.

As it is, Dick couldn't explain exactly why finding the bar appear on the way to his dorm feels like a betrayal.

The boy stands in the doorway, fists clenching at his side as he glares at the bar for daring to still exist, and still be bright and loud and friendly when everything on the other side of the door is broken.

He glares for one second,
two seconds,
three seconds...

And then he vanishes into the rafters.

Dick doesn't want ice cream. He just wants Almanzo to go away and leave him alone.

He wants his parents back.

He wants to not be living in an orphanage.

...actually, he really wants ice cream.

"Kay," he says, dropping down to the ground.

"What be..." Almanzo starts, then stops, because it's clearly something Very Bad and he probably shouldn't ask.

He picks up the ice block.

"We sawed this out the lake." he says, "So it's nice and fresh." he puts it on the table. "First we got to smash it."

Yeah, Dick does not want to talk about it.

He looks at the block of ice on the table, and wonders why they don't just buy ice cream from the bar.

But this looks fun.

"What do we smash it with?"

"A hammer?" Almanzo suggests. "Maybe we can borrow one from the bar."

He doesn't know you can buy ice cream ready made. But he knows how to make it.

"We need sugar and cream after." he says.

"Alright," says Dick.

He turns around, and vaults over the table that he finds between himself and the bar. It's not a highly energetic move, as Dick-moves go. But it is a move that comes naturally to him, and the table was in his way.

He returns with a hammer, a bag of sugar and a quart of heavy cream. "How much do we need?"

"Usually we mix it together until it looks right." Almanzo says, getting some bowls.

"You can smash first." He adds, since it looks like Dick needs it.

Eventually Dick will realize he didn't bring a bowl.

But right now, he grabs the hammer, and he looks at the block of ice, and he whacks the one into the other, with a great swing.

It breaks off some, but it also leaves the big block of ice sliding onto the floor.

Almanzo giggles, a little nervously.

"Good hit!" he says, putting it back on the table. It's kind of slidey though, now it's starting to melt at the bottom.

Dick shrugs, and hands Almanzo the hammer.

"You need me to hold it?"

"...maybe." Almanzo admits. "As it ain't in the ice house."

He whacks it, not managing as good a hit as Dick, but breaking off a shower of ice bits into the bowl; then swaps over and hands the hammer back.

Dick takes the hammer and weighs it again, letting Almanzo hold the block as he swings another time.

He has the advantage of strength and arm mobility and, this time gets a nice chunk off, without losing the larger block.

Without even thinking, he tossing the hammer to his left hand before handing it over.

Almanzo gives it a whack, and a big crack goes down the middle before he passes the hammer back.

"This be like beating icicles." he comments. "They make a fantastic noise."

"Do they?" Dick asks, curious. "I've never done it."

"Sometimes Royal and me have done it to get bath water." Almanzo says. "Quicker than hauling snow."

He considers, then adds.

"Do you want to come back with me after to see it? You'd have to hide until we finished loading the ice."

He thinks.

And thinks it sounds better than going back to the orphanage.

"Yeah, alright," he agrees finally.

"You got to be disguised like I was." Almanzo adds. "I can say you're from school."

Smash ice.

"Mother's sure to let you stay for tea, she's making pumpkin pie."

"I can do disguise," Dick says.

He can also, maybe, try and talk like Almanzo.

"And I like pie.

"...is that enough ice?"

"I think so." Almanzo says. "We should probably take the rest of the block outside though or it'll make a big mess."

He pushes the rest of the shattered ice into the bowl, and takes the rest outside.

Dick isn't sure whether he should be following Almanzo or not, because that would mean leaving the ice and the cream and the sugar. But in the end he trails after him.

"What d'we do now?"

[ooc: Ack, sorry, lost the notif.]

"Now we mix it up real good." Almanzo says. "And eat it."

Dick grins, and grabs the carton of cream, ripping the top off.

"Alright. Get a spoon."

It's a relief to see Dick smile. Having his friend look so upset was a worry.

Almanzo bounds off to get a couple of spoons, then returns and hands one to Dick.

Well.

Ice cream.

Dick leaps onto the table, squatting by the bowl, and pours the cream into the bowl, lifting the carton up high above his head in a dramatic barman flare.

He does the same thing with the entire carton of sugar, and starts to mix with the spoon Almanzo gave him.

Almanzo giggles.

"That be an odd way to pour." he nibbles some sugar off the table. "Fun though."

"Gets it in the bowl, don't it?"
