When Yugo got back from Shiragiku City - a trip that, in total, lasted no more than twenty minutes, time in Milliways notwithstanding, he supposes - he was immediately set upon by two slightly over-enthused handlers with new equipment for him, in the form of a dozen or so rings.

So he's out back right now, testing them out, scanning them over the gold disk on his wrist one by one.

"Defend, please," the gold disk chirps in that somewhat uncanny mechanical voice of its as he scans the fifth ring of the day. The familiar shape of his magical circle appears floating in the air, still.

Yugo tries tossing a rock at it. It bounces off on contact, sizzling a little as it hits the grass. With a quick nod, Yugo stows that ring away and reaches for another one.

Botherable.

"Or maybe the Wizard managed to travel to pocket dimensions with his magic," he muses, "to either subdue them or strike up a pact."

Autor grins wryly. "Everything you tell me about Soukichi makes me respect him more."

Yugo rubs his face. "When you two inevitably meet you'll either hate each other or become the best of friends, I can just see it now," he says, as if this is the most horrifying thing imaginable. "But the White Wizard is pretty much a mystery to us, and the other Riders really don't like that. So Haruto's being watched, and helped out a little when he really needs it, but otherwise kept at a distance."

"The former, probably," Autor says, smirking. "I'll set up my devices and he'll set up his, and we'll both take notes on techniques and label the other an amateur."

He taps his chin thoughtfully. "I have a lot to learn from him already. I can tell."

The boy does frown a little. "Haruto sounds like he's being groomed to be a wild card himself."

"You know, dude, I have nightmares like that. Then both of you turn into the weird lettuce slice-y thing with the blades and I have to run away, but I can't because I've lost all my clothes," Yugo says reproachfully.

"I suppose he is. Someone who could help us, or end up being a hindrance, or both," Yugo says thoughtfully. "Mostly I'm just worried that whatever the White Wizard wants with him, he's going to end up losing out because of it."

Autor stares at him for a moment. "You have nightmares where you're naked and I turn into a series of blades? That had better not be prophetic."

He shakes his head, ridding himself of that image. "And he probably will, yes," Autor says thoughtfully. "He's a pawn between two chess masters. Pawns always lose, no matter who's winning."

"Most of my nightmares involve nudity and giant blade things," Yugo says solemnly. "Sometimes they also have impromptu history tests and meteorites. If they are prophetic, we're all in for a very strange few days at some point in the future."

Beat.

"I guess that means I'll have to keep an eye on him, then. Might as well even things out by giving him at least one ally."

"Indeed," Autor says, as wetly as the Sahara. "Thank goodness I don't dream."

The kid shrugs. "Sure, if you can counteract whatever the Wizard has been telling him about the Riders. Which may be the same thing the Riders say about the Wizard. Who knows."

"You don't?" Hey, it might be true.

He frowns a little. "I trust Soukichi and Yuriko, so I trust them when they say the Wizard is an unknown, and that we don't know what his motives are. S'why I kinda have to keep an eye on Haruto - he doesn't have them looking out for him, not in the same way I do."

Autor shakes his head.

"Oh, I believe you," he says. "I'm just thinking that Haruto might get a different story about the Riders, or a past people would prefer stay buried. Keeping an eye on him is good."

Thoughtfully: "Keeping an eye on him is good. Well, I imagine you'll be trawling through the monastery's archives the moment you have the opportunity anyway. You'll tell me if some dark secret comes up."

Autor laughs. "Are you sure you want me poking around in there? Give me a day and I'll dig up fossils of every scandal they've ever had."

"I'm sure," Yugo grins. "Better to know about these things than not, right?"

Autor snorts delicately. "You'll regret that after I'm done, I'm sure. Most people do. Thank you for showing me your rings, Yugo," he says. "Let me know if you need a brain to bounce ideas off of for an organization system."

It's a better goodbye than most people get, but then again, this is Yugo.
