The morning after Cubefall, William went to the counter to get some breakfast and got a note with his coffee.

He tucked it away before starting on his meal and reading The Black Arrow, which he had began before Cubefall.

Its a good distraction though he is keeping an eye out for that girl who got hurt though he doesn't know if she was in her own shape or not, but she'll need looking after.

"Here, things are quiet back home,"

That might change soon but it hasn't yet.

"Mm. Well, at least things're quiet at home, 'cause nobody needs shit on both sides of the door, y'know?"

Which is kind of what's happened with Tommy earlier in the year, but the boil has been reduced to a simmer. At least, that's what he thinks.

"No, but happens often enough,"

And he knows mainly things are calm at home because no one cares.

"Yeah, you got that right," he mumbles into his cup of coffee before taking a sip.

"This news about your friend-- good or bad?"

"I'm not sure. Its just her leavin' a note,"

Everything with Thalia is odd and kind of hurts.

He raises his eyebrows at him a bit knowingly. Okay, a lot knowingly.

"Oh, it's from a girl."

"Yeah,"

His eyebrows are saying far too much and William focuses on his coffee.

He exhales a breath of a chuckle, tapping ashes off the end of his cigarette.

"Listen, kid, I've seen all, done all. When it comes to the opposite sex, there ain't nothin' that surprises me anymore, so if you've got a problem, y'know, you can lay it on me if you want. Maybe I can help. Or at least offer a diagnosis of the situation."

"It ain't much of a situation anymore. Cause of what happened in her world, we're not anythin' anymore and she left me a sort of nice note before she left,"

He appreciates her writing but he doesn't know what to do in reaction.

"Ah, sorry to hear that, kid, that sucks," he says, frowning a little. "So, you've broken up but she still wants to be friends, is that it?"

"Yeah, which is nice and should be fine. Just wasn't expectin' a note from her was all. It sounds stupid put that way."

"Nah, maybe she just wanted to put a bow on the whole thing, maybe a little closure if she felt things were left hanging. Any possibility of you gettin' back together?"

"No, I can't think of anyway it would happen,"

Not with the choice Thalia made.

He cocks an eyebrow. "Wow. Jeezus. Is it that definite?"

"She's a Hunter of Artemis who's a maiden goddess who doesn't like men. I think it is."

...

"Ah."

Well, that certainly puts the kibosh on it.

Frowning deeply, he scratches his chin. "I thought I'd heard everything, but I think I've officially heard everything."

"Her father's Zeus so it sort of makes sense in her world, I guess. I mean she forgot about Milliways while out there and didn't remember me until comin' back when she'd already taken the Oath. She's happy, its just strange,"

And something that would only go wrong in Milliways.

The more he hears, the more it sucks.

"--Holy crap, her father is Zeus? Oh, man."

He sighs, shaking his head in a cloud of cigarette smoke.

"And she forgot about Milliways? How could she forget about this place? And you?"

"Cause she did. I don't understand cause we don't have any of that stuff in my world,"

He takes a long drink of his coffee and wishes it had something stronger in it.

"I never heard of that happening before. That's just messed up. Fuckin' Milliways, man, you never know how that door's gonna work once you step through it."

Tommy reaches over and clasps his shoulder, giving it a brief but bracing squeeze.

"'M sorry, kid. But I guess we all gotta learn that while Milliways makes a lot of things possible, it also makes other things-- well, impossible."

"Neither have I, it was weird,"

The squeeze is nice and William manages a small smile.

As Tommy mashes out his cigarette stub and lights up another one, he can't help a fond glance at William. He never had the chance to have this sort of conversation with his own son. Minus the Milliways factor, of course, but still.

"Well, weird is what this place does best. Throw a relationship into the mix, and believe me, you've got the perfect storm. If you'd asked me when I first started coming here, I would've said that gettin' into a relationship with someone you met here would be a completely insane idea, but really, who's to say? I actually know people who've made it work. Like this scientist guy who married an alien. And there's this cop who's in a serious thing with a Navy SEAL."

~~And there's a fireman and a cowgirl.~~

"Lemme tell ya, it don't matter how old you are, what time period you're from, what goddamn planet you're from, relationships are always gonna be complicated. Was she your first girlfriend?"

Its more than William had with his father as well, which adds another bit of hurt,

"Me too and some that didn't. She was."

A faint look of wry amusement crosses his face.

"So your first girlfriend...was a daughter of Zeus. Zeus, like, the god of all gods. I would either congratulate you or question your choice in potential in-laws."

(He teases because he cares.)

"How long were you two together?"

William blushes as he's still not sure why she was with him,

"I don't know exactly cause of how odd time is with Milliways. It didn't feel like long enough."
