Stiles Stilinski's First Entrance (for real this time!)

Stiles Stilinski is trying to solve one of the greatest mysteries of his young life, and he's six now, so he's knows from mysteries. Mom and Dad are taking him to a baseball game (Go Beacon Hills Bluebirds!), but he can't find his baseball glove anywhere.

He runs back into his room—Dad says if he's not ready in five minutes they're leaving without him—double checks under the bed, then pulls open the closet. It looks like he took a wrong turn on the way to Narnia, cause he's just walked into some sort of restaurant, and some of the people there definitely don't look like they belong in Beacon Hills.

He reacts pretty much as you'd expect a boy this curious and enthusiastic about the world would.

"This is so cool!"

"If they do, they've never talked to me," Ellen says. "They mostly just squeak. And sometimes they make faces if they think someone's being foolish."

[whatisastiles]

"Bummer." Talking rats would've been cool.

"Hi Mr. Rat!" he calls to the nearest one. "Can I have some chocolate milk?"

He recalls a frequent reminder from Mom.

"Please?"

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

The rat chitters and runs off. "He'll be back in a minute," Ellen says. "The Bar's magic, but the rats have to actually use the kitchen."

[whatisastiles]

"This place is the best!" he says. "Usually I have to drink reg'lar milk. Don't tell my mom," he says solemnly.

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"Don't worry, I won't," says Ellen. "I probably won't even ever see her. I kinda think we might be from two different places."

The rat, meanwhile, returns with the chocolate milk.

"I'm from Beacon Hills," he says, over a chocolate milk mustache. "In California, in the United States of America. Where are you from?"

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

Now, Ellen could give him all the details. But he's what, seven? Maybe? At that age she was having trouble understanding why they didn't have windows or open the Vault door. So-

"Washington, DC," she says, "but in the future. I'm from the year 2278. It's going to be 2279 very soon."

[whatisastiles]

"Whoooooa. You're from the future? Do you have spaceships and stuff?"

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"Well," says Ellen, "I've been on a spaceship, and it's still up in orbit and some of my friends are on it. It's an alien spaceship, though. Does that count?"

[whatisastiles]

"That totally counts! Could you see the whole Earth?"

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"A lot of it," Ellen says, "but we weren't high up enough to see the whole world at once. Not even when I had to put on a spacesuit and walk on the outside of the ship because some things didn't work."

Mind, she was too busy hyperventilating to really look towards the planet.

"Were you scared to walk in space? Did you know there's no air there?"

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"I was terrified ," Ellen admits. "There's no air *and* it's huge and dark and cold. And you can't hear anything except your suit making noise around you, either. "

[whatisastiles]

"That sounds really scary. Did you fix the ship? I guess you did cause you're here not in space still."

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"It was," says Ellen, "but you know, it had to be done, so I just got it done and then it was over, even as scary as it'd been. And we all managed to get to where we needed to go to get off the ship, so that's good too."

[whatisastiles]

"That's good. I'm glad you got home okay." Ellen is nice and has a nice dog, so he wouldn't want her to get lost in space.

"Is everyone an astronaut like you in the future?"

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"Oh, no," says Ellen. "In fact, I'm not an astronaut myself. I'm a soldier- I'd been kidnapped onto the ship, you see. That's why it was so important to get back to Earth. But there are lots of other kinds of people in the future, too. My father was a doctor, and there's farmers and teachers and scientists- all kinds of things."

[whatisastiles]

"You got kidnapped?" he says, eye wide. "I bet that was really scary. I hope I never get kidnapped. My Dad's a deputy. I bet if he was there he'd save you."

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"He just might," says Ellen. Hey, you never know; if he'd been on board the ship, maybe he'd have been able to fight the aliens too. It worked for Paulson, after all. "Is he a sheriff's deputy, like in the cowboy vids?"

[whatisastiles]

"Yep! Mom says one day he's going to be Sheriff. It's a really important job." His parents have explained that Dad's job is dangerous, but it's important to keep the town safe.

"He's never seen aliens before."

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"Oh, it's definitely an important job," Ellen agrees. "I hope he does a good job at it. Is it very dangerous where you live? It seems like places with sheriffs usually need brave people to be police."

[whatisastiles]

"Mom says Beacon Hills is really safe. But Dad says he had to shoot at somebody before."

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

Ellen nods. "I hope he doesn't have to very often," she says. "That kind of thing is really tough."

[whatisastiles]

"He said usually he just shoots at pieces of paper. He says when I'm old enough he'll teach me, but I have to be safe. I'm not allowed to touch his gun."

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"That makes sense," Ellen says. "My dad didn't let me use even a BB gun until I was ten years old, just to be sure I was careful with it."
