The bar door opens wide and hits its baseboards with a slam, a blur of brown leather somersaulting in to land on the floor.

At least when he lands, he still has both pistol and honest-to-Fozu bag of platinum.





...but Mal might need to stay on the floor. Just for a minute.

"We're running out of time to come up with names we haven't used yet."

It happens, when you go through them seven at a time.

"Sometimes, this place knows just when to bring people in."

Other times, it sends you to the wrong side of Ambergeldar and there are dwarves and French princesses.

"Would you like something to drink? I was just going to get some tea."

"Do you know if it's a boy or girl yet?"

"Thank you," Amy says.

"And no, though Susan says she has enough brothers, thank you, and could she please have a sister this time.

"My Godmama Crustacea said we'd have four sons and two daughters, so really, at this point, even odds."

"Crustacea."

Mal now has very specific images of this godmother.

At the bar, Mal orders a Ng Ka Pe for one and adds enough credit for Amy to get whatever she might like. (Mal doesn't notice, but the money just gets credited to the children's fund rather than paying for the individual drinks.)

"My fairy godmother -- well, one of them. She's the one who made me Ordinary, and told me to go find a job in Perry's castle, before I knew Perry," Amy says, stirring sugar into her tea.

"It was part of my wedding present. I got also got the respect and devotion of my subjects, the keeping of the love of my husband, and living happily for all my days."

"...Can I get a fairy godmomma too?"

"I can introduce you at the next christening. She's been to the others, so I'm sure she'll turn up at this one."

They don't actually invite her, but that's a fairy godmother for you.

"She's the fairy in charge of water, and she tends to be very fond of sailors."

And Mal is basically a sailor.

Right?

"She got on very well with Captain Sparrow and Professor Lyon."

"Is that safe? To be allowin' magic folk around Captain Jack?"

"Well, the palace didn't collapse.

"A few odds and ends went missing, but I don't think that had anything to do with Godmama Crustacea . . . "

"I imagine not, no.

"How long's it been since you've been in Milliways?"

[kitchen_maid]

"Oh, not that long," Amy says. "A little earlier this month.

"I've had guests coming back and forth."

It's all been very handwavey, really.

"What about you?"

"Been a spell. We've been tryin' to keep business comin' to the ship, but it's been a bit more dry than usual."

In that way where his ship staying in the air needed this payoff.

"For any particular reason, do you know?"

"Cheaper ways to get gou pi to where you want it to go, nowadays. Things are slightly less illegal now."

[kitchen_maid]

"Things with your ship are slightly less illegal, or things in general are slightly less illegal?"

[badinlatin]

"Things in general. Which makes stubborn old men like me grumpy and less than employed."

[kitchen_maid]

"Hmmmm.

"Well, I'd offer to hire you to do something, but I'm the Queen, which basically means almost anything I do is legal because I'm the one doing it."
