(a little reading)

The lowercase half of the bar's nonstop Goth party is on the couch today, reading a book to skull-hat-wearing baby Egil in the exaggerated tones people normally use when reading to children. It's... sort of a picture book?

"So you take your two-by-fours and you cut them into five foot pieces, and you wrap them all over with rope--you know why they put the rope on there? It's for scratching, yeah. You've seen, so you know. And then you build a box--right, so they have somewhere quiet to sleep, or hide, or just sit in and watch what's going on. You're very smart. And you cover it with pieces of carpet and--that's my face, honey. Gonna get your hand--om nom nom, got your hand."

Which is why she's taken her lip-rings out. They're not really good around babies.

Feel free to interrupt their cat-furniture-planning session; Egil doesn't really understand the fine points of carpentry yet, so doesn't have a lot to say.

"You didn't strike me as the babysitting type." Amanda noted as she came to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. She quietly regards the young one.

He's the cutest baby currently on this couch. Sure, he's the only one, but he sets the bar pretty high.

"I love kids," she says with a grin. "Just, you know, a lot of parents worry about me borrowing theirs because they might get the kids back dressed all funny. Like... skull hats, and band t-shirts and things."

Which is exactly how Egil is dressed.

Amanda grins, "I think it's a good look." she hasn't seen the like on a child before, "It seems to suit the child."

"He's not like a pirate baby or anything," she says. "We are in no danger of raiding and marauding, at least not yet--he's still working on the basics, for right now. But who knows, when he grows up. He could be anything."

Which is pretty amazing, when you think about it.

"Marauding can be fun." she points out showing no sign of judgement.

She looks at the baby, "That's how it always starts out, hope and endless possibilities." she sighs.

"I figure he's got to be able to hold his head up and, probably, walk before he can maraud properly," she grins. "So... when he's two? Terrible twos, right? Kids turn all pirate?"

Probably depends on what daycare centers they get sent to.

"It's the weirdest thing about babies. You look at them and yeah, right now they're pretty needy, they can't do anything for themselves yet, but one day who knows? They're all potential."

Amanda chuckles, "So what is it's name?" she gestures to the kid. She usually doesn't like kids but there are a couple exceptions.

"Egil," she says. "Egil Skaðason, a whole lot of name for such a little guy. Me and Teja, we're like his foster-parents. He's not ours, but for now we're doing most of the raising, since we both live here and are always around."

"It's something for him to grow into" she says with some optimism. "Who are the actual parents?" she asks, something about Teja sounds familiar and she tries to recall.

"His mother's Skaði," she says. "Big blond werewolfy kinda woman, looks like she can tear people in half, likes to fight. And his father's... well, not Skaði's husband, so that's why he's here with his grandfather instead of back home with her. It was less awkward that way."

Still awkward, though. Just less so.

"Sounds like someone I would rather be on good terms with." a brief pause, "It's nice of you to look after the child." looking back at the child for a moment, "So you want something to drink?" she offers.

[scarred_grin]

"He's my roommate's gentleman-caller's grandson, that's how I ended up with him," she explains. "They both--my roommate and her husband--have work you can't really do with kids around, and all I do is art, so here we are. And I'd love a drink--they make the best Italian sodas here. I got a watermelon one the other day and it was so good."

Amanda ordered two watermelon Italian sodas, "When was it invented? Because I live in Italy at the moment and I haven't heard of such a drink."

"I think they're actually American, they just call them Italian," she says. "I've been to Italy--Teja's got a house somewhere in Tuscany, near a small town I don't remember the name of, and we went to a restaurant there and when I ordered an Italian soda what they gave me was something totally different. Still good, but... different, you know?"

"Yes, I think I do understand." when they arrive Amanda gives it a try. She giggles at the fiz of the soda, she doesn't drink alot of soda in 1636.

"This is good." she comments.

"Sometimes I get a couple different flavors in one glass, but don't mix them together, so there's like... layers of color that kinda blur a little. Like they do with fancy cocktails sometimes, you know? Get like dark cherry and lighter watermelon, or maybe strawberry and lemon. We used to go to a coffeeshop where my favorite barista would do that for me. She'd make them look so nice, and she put those little paper umbrellas in everything."

Laughing, "That sounds like fun."
