When Steve sits at the bar, the first thing he gets is a cupcake with red, white and blue frosting and Happy 95th Birthday!.

"Yeah, yeah," he says in a good-natured tone, because even he has given up trying to keep track of how old he is. Twenty-eight, ninety-five, two? Ninety-five is probably the most accurate.

The second thing he gets is a napkin: Want to bartend today?

Yes. Yes, he does. The Big Book of Drinks even has a patriotic section.

"Happy Liberty Day, Steve," Sunshine beams, approaching the bar. "Oh - and happy birthday, too!"

"Happy Independence Day," Steve answers. "And thank you."

Rae is in a sleeveless shirt of red-and-white check, today, and a plain pair of blue jeans. The colors and the day are right, even if the words and nations are different. As she takes a seat at the bar, she asks, "How have you been?"

"Coping," Steve says simply. "Getting used to modern life, saving the world when it needs it.

"How are you?"

"All those are good things," she replies, offering a slight, understanding smile. "I've been... yeah, still trying to save the world - but there's been some signs we're making a difference, lately - and coping with having split loyalties."

Loyalties that aren't so much split as disappearing over the horizons in opposite directions.

"Thinking about making pie." It's traditional, on Liberty Day.

"Apple?" Steve says, grinning. "I thought about offering slices of apple pie with the specials tonight. Seems appropriate.

"What kind of split loyalties?" he adds seriously.

"Apple it is, then. I might do cherry and blueberry pies, too," she smiles, resting her elbows on the bar.

"I was kind of... asked to help out by some of the local SOF - Special Other Forces - who are regulars at the coffeehouse. They're of the mindset - a mindset shared by the overwhelming majority of humanity - that the only good vampire is a staked and beheaded vampire."

"They asked me to help, meaning for me to go out and... well, just flat reduce the numbers. But it's not what I'm doing. We're going out and hoping, at least, to change their minds about how they go about being a vampire. In a way that will benefit both vampires and humans in the long-run."

"Do you think that would work? I don't know much about vampires, but it seems like they're pretty satisfied with how they do things."

"I was convinced it wouldn't work, at first. But we've been doing this for a couple of years, now, and word's getting around. There's been a significant drop in the number of attacks on humans in New Arcadia and Piscataweh to the south."

"The younger suckers tend to be more likely to listen to us - they've not had too long to get really invested in the system, and are willing to try something different in order to keep their autonomy."

"Seems to me like it'd be like taming a wild animal," Steve says. "But if it's actually making a difference, good. I'm glad."

"Many many wild animals who hunt humans by their nature," she agrees.

"It's difficult to listen to my SOFs be so enthusiastic about... what I'm not actually doing. And I can't tell them, because they wouldn't understand. They don't know that my only real ally in all this is a vampire, himself."

Steve smiles a little. "Like they're as stuck in their ways as the older vampires."

"Just like that," she nods, sighing.

"Could I get a glass of iced tea? I just something to sip while making the pies."

"Of course," Steve says, and heads for the kitchen so see what's in the stores.

He comes back, triumphant. "Do you like lemon in it?"

"Hello Rae, you are looking better rested." Amanda takes a seat.

[OOC: what's a little thread hopping between friends?]

"Hey, Amanda," Rae smiles, taking a seat at the bar. "It's amazing what a couple of nights of twelve hours of sleep will do."

Though the sleep's not responsible for how the bruises she'd worn are now completely gone.

"Good rest is always worth it." She grins.

"What are you having?" she's looking for idea's.

"Don't know yet. I'm just thinking about some iced tea. Something to drink while I make pies."

"Pies? What kind of pies?"

"Apple, cherry, and blueberry," she replies. "Pie is traditional, on Liberty Day."

"Liberty Day? Liberty from what?"

"From tyranny," Rae answers. "It's the anniversary of when Independencia declared its liberty from Albion."

"Then let me celebrate with you." she asks conversationally. "So what time are you from?" if she is still calling England Albion.

"To liberty" she raises her glass of American Beauty.
