When Steve sits at the bar, the first thing he gets is a cupcake with red, white and blue frosting and Happy 95th Birthday!.

"Yeah, yeah," he says in a good-natured tone, because even he has given up trying to keep track of how old he is. Twenty-eight, ninety-five, two? Ninety-five is probably the most accurate.

The second thing he gets is a napkin: Want to bartend today?

Yes. Yes, he does. The Big Book of Drinks even has a patriotic section.

"Yeah, I remember that," Steve murmurs.

"Not something we should be talking about today," Dr. Lecter says. "I apologise. It's not a day for darkness."

"I wouldn't mind changing the subject," Steve says. "So, what do you like to barbecue?"

"Meat, mostly," Dr. Lecter says. "Marinaded or rubbed with spices, or as a kabob mixed with vegetables. I have one of those big globular barbecue grills that are very pleasant to work with."

"That sounds delicious. Are you a beef guy or a pork guy?"

"I appreciate many kinds of meat," Dr. Lecter says. "Some rare and unusual meats can be quite interesting barbecued. Did you ever have emu, or kangaroo?"

[[meta: while the good doctor is completely deapan, the mun half-dies snerking with amusement at steve's innocent tags!]]

"Never," Steve says, shaking his head. "The most exotic I've gotten is lamb. There are probably lots of places in the city to try out exotic stuff, like you said, but I haven't found them yet."

[ooc: He had to ask :D.]

"In New York city," Dr. Lecter says, "you can find all the food in the world. Lamb isn't very exotic by my books. It doesn't have to be imported, and it's neither rare not overly pricey, like buffalo."

"It's exotic compared to what I grew up eating. Chicken most days, beef if we could get it, and fish on Fridays."

"No pork?" Dr. Lecter asks.

"Not often," Steve says. "My mother didn't like it, and after she passed it was mostly chicken in the orphanage."

"So, do you barbecue pork now that you can?" Dr. Lecter asks.

"I don't cook much," Steve admits sheepishly. "Mostly, I eat out."

"It's not for everyone," Lecter says. "And in the time you came from, considered unmanly, so you weren't taught."

"And I'm hungry so much that if I cooked for myself, I wouldn't have time for anything else."

"An accelerated metabolism as a side effect of your transformation?" Dr. Lecter seems to guess.

"That's right--four times faster than normal. It means faster healing, but it also means I'm constantly hungry, and I can't get drunk. Well, I can on Atlantean, but not on anything that's available in the regular world."

"I should try Atleantean eventually..." Dr. Lecter muses. "What does it taste like?"

"Apples and sunlight," Steve says. "And I'd approach it carefully. Small sips."

"So I've been frequently told," Lecter says. "I will. I don't want to reel around drunk."

"Or worse," says Steve. "It's strong. It even gets gods drunk."

"Yrael was quite fine with it," Dr. Lecter says. "So it has its limits. But I understand they must be far beyond mine."

"I don't know Yrael," Steve says, "but it got Demeter drunk, according to my friend who's her nephew--and me, obviously, so."

"I must be very careful with it, then," Dr. Lecter says.

Steve nods. "But you're obviously someone with a refined sense of taste--I'm sure you'll know how to enjoy it."
