EP: Kate Barlow | Main Bar, Library (age spell plot)

It had been a quiet day for Kate when the loud BWA-BOOOOOOOM shook the bar. She'd just settled down after her nightly chores in the stables, easing the tension out of her back in an armchair by the fire, sipping on a hot tea with bourbon in.

(It's getting close to All Hallows' Eve, and that's making her anxious.)

However, she didn't have all that long to think about the approaching holiday before she was seeing the room from an even lower vantage point, face scrunched in distaste at the liquor on her tongue. She blinked at the teacup and quickly set it down, jumped to her feet, and looked around the strange room.

" ... Daddy?"

Kate Barlow, aged twelve, was off in search of her father.

What she found instead were the libraries.


Now, far calmer, a young Kate sits amid a pile of books, occasionally sweeping cautious glances around the room. She's finding the words of Jules Verne to be a comfort at present. Clearly she slipped and bumped her head during chores, or stumbled onto a glorious vessel somewhere in deep space. She isn't quite sure what to make of it right now, but anywhere with an endless supply of science fiction can't be all that bad.


[ooc: open forever! you may find Kate in the library or the main bar. if your character wants to be in on a heist, they can take this opportunity to meet Kate. the actual heist will happen in a later post, so it's not required you tag this one (I'll update all interested parties once it's all in place). if you'd like me to send Kate round to one of your posts, just let me know!

No amount of nerves could keep her eyes from lighting up at that.

"How wonderful! I've heard such tales of New York. Do the buildings really reach up into the sky?"

[balancingminds]

"Oh yes, you can look up and they frame it. I love it. Where are you from? I'm Charles."

[ikissdhimbck]

At last, a flash of a smile, quick and delighted. She wraps her hands around her knees.

"I'm Katherine. It's a pleasure t'meet you, Charles. I live in Texas with my daddy, close to Green Lake."

[balancingminds]

"I don't know where Green Lake is but I've heard about Texas. Its big and has lots of sky, but I like New York best. Sometimes the City gives me a headache but everyone comes there."

"We don't have any big buildin's where I'm from, so the sky stretches on for miles."

She tilts her head to one shoulder.

"How come you get headaches?"

[balancingminds]

"Its like that at our house since we have a lot of land near the Hudson. Oh, just cause of all the people. I get them here too but nothing like I do in New York."

"They must be a noisy bunch. Then again, you've got all them fine cobblestone streets and carriages running night and day. I bet it does put up an awful racket!"

[balancingminds]

"More cars since you don't see carriages that often unless people are going around the Park. It does, people think very loudly."

A line forms between her brows.

"You mean train cars?"

Beat.

"How can somebody think loudly?"

[balancingminds]

He pauses as he didn't mean to say that loud and looks around for a good book and pulls one down with a car on the cover,

"Um, they might not have them in your time, like this."

"Oh, I've never seen that before."

It's just like something out of a science fiction book. She wonders how they work.

"Um. I'm sorry, did I say something wrong?"

[balancingminds]

"No, I did but it doesn't matter. See the way they work is they have an engine in the front and they can take you around. Some of them are rather neat looking."

She blushes.

"So then they're sorta like a train, with the engine an' all. Or a horseless carriage. Have you been in one? Are they fun t'ride in?"

[balancingminds]

"I have, yes, quite often. They're the best way to go into the City, well sometimes we go by train but not as often. Mother doesn't like it as much."

[ikissdhimbck]

Kate smiles softly. He seems like such a refined young man, taking trips into the city in his strange 'car'.

"Golly. You must have a lot of fun. I've never been to a city before."

[balancingminds]

"You should go if you can. There's everything you can want from big stores to all the lights and the avenues. All sorts of people with all their languages and clothes. I love it but its tiring because they're all so busy and full of worries and hopes and other things."

[ikissdhimbck]

"I wanna go everywhere."

She drips with enthusiasm. Kate's hopes and dreams are too big to fit in her little old body.

"Someday I'd like to travel the whole world, an' see everything. I wanna learn all kinds of things, and teach other people, too! And I want to have adventures, like Billy the Kid an' Jesse James."

"Are you a cowgirl?"

She sounds like she is and her thoughts make her seem like might be.

She blushes.

"Well — kinda!"

She's a little young for working the stock, though she sneaks out to the barn every chance she gets. And Jim, their stable master, lets her. Her daddy's talking about finishing school and education, which is fine and well, but Kate loves riding.

"I live on a big ol' horse ranch. Just got my very own pony this year!"

She's very proud.

"That's brilliant. I go riding sometimes but don't have a pony. What's your pony's name?"

She preens a little.

"She's my beauty, so I named her Beaut. She's just a filly right now, but she'll be fit for ridin' in a year or two. And she's real fine, got a lovely chestnut coat an' a white star."

[balancingminds]

"She sounds pretty."

[ikissdhimbck]

"She is."

She pauses, thinking over something seriously.

"Do you name your 'cars'?"

[balancingminds]

"Some people do, but my family doesn't."

[ikissdhimbck]

"Oh."

She tilts her head to one shoulder.

"Do you have any pets?"
