milliways_bar | Party Time!

It has been a lot of work all day, schlepping stuff back and forth, enlisting the help of wait rats, fighting with the wait rats, coordinating with Bar, fighting with Bar, and basically making most of it up as he went along.

He's never actually thrown a party before, okay?!

But, finally and at last, Hellboy has done it.

Outside by the lake shore there is a Party. A Party with balloons, streamers, banners, a giant inflatable gorilla, food, LOUD music, a petting zoo, several cars display, and the occasional firework.

It starts as a celebration for Enzo's graduation from the Guardian Academy, but after Red hears the good news, it turns into an engagement party as well (after Red goes through and changes all the signs from 'Congrats, Enzo!' to 'Congrats, Enzo and Dani').

Everyone is invited, so come on, celebrate and have some fun!

She eyes the two with suspicion.

"How will y'know which part needs fixin'?"

Mairi is uncertain of this as well. Ana is confident, though. "We do like Mommy does."

Kate's eyes sparkle with unuttered laughter.

"That does make sense. How would your mama go about fixin' somethin' like this?"

In response, Ana attempts to raise the hood again.

"Would your mama not ask the owner if it's all right t'be pokin' around?"

Permission is important.

Sometimes.

"They ask her."

Duh.

"Has anybody asked you?"

If the goal is emulation, they've skipped a rather important step. Kate simply tries to keep from smiling.

(She does love feisty, independent thinkers.)

The girls look at each other.

They look at the car.

They look at each other.

Then they turn two sets of hopeful puppy eyes on Kate. She's an anybody!

Oh dear. She should have anticipated this.

"Tell y'what — why don't we start with lookin'. Jus' lookin', no touchin'. Then we can go from there."

They nod vigorously. Yay!

She nods, once. They've struck a deal.

Straightening up, she examines the hood of the car for a few moments before discovering a catch. Ah, she recalls now. There's a button inside that will release it. Luckily, the driver's-side door is unlocked, and it takes little searching to find it.

Pop.

Excellent! Once the hood releases, Mairi is able to lift it the rest of the way, and Analog clambers up on the front bumper to examine the workings.

Let's see. What does Mommy do next?

Oh, yes. Ana inhales sharply through her teeth, as though witnessing something worrisome and expensive.

"What is it?"

Kate circles back around to where the two girls are, obviously convinced they have some special knowledge.

My, there's a lot of parts in there.

Ana adopts a professional and slightly condescending tone. "Gots a real problem here," she begins. The stream of jargon which follows is unlikely to mean anything at all to Kate, but even she might catch a hint that the kid is making half of it up and mixing up the rest.

Mercy, she is as cute as a button. Kate barely resists the temptation to 'aww' and melt into a puddle.

"Mmhm. Mmhm. My, that does sound serious. What d'you suppose we should do?"

"I need tools." This much is certain.

"I'll get 'em!" declares Mairi. She zooms off in the direction of the buffet, and returns with a double handful of silverware.

Kate hums warily.

"I do believe tools stray from 'jus' lookin'' territory an' straight into touchin' territory."

"I'm not touching. The tools're touching."

Tools, spoons, same difference.

These tools in particular fill her with a sense of dread.

"The tools are gonna get up an' walk themselves into this car, all by themselves?"

The girls exchange a look, and brighten. "Yes!"

That's allowed, right, if they're not touching the tools?

Kate blinks, visibly surprised. It takes her a moment to work out how to answer.

"Really? All by themselves?"

"Uh-huh!" With no physical contact, anyway. Smug little girls are smug.

"I see."

Beat.

"Well, then."

Beat.

"I guess so long as you ain't touchin' 'em ... "

Yay!

Mairi hands Ana most of the silverware, retaining one spoon for herself. Her brow furrows a little, and a sparkly golden glow forms around the hand holding the spoon. Then the glow pushes the spoon out into the air, holding it there, a beam connecting hand and spoon.

Kate feels increasingly more like she's just been railroaded.

"Now, that ain't fair."

Magic is still a form of touching! However, what's a teacher to do?
