(no subject)

There is a Noriko running circuits of the lake outside, trying to kill time and maybe tire herself out. This last in itself is kind of futile; this is the same girl who's run from upstate New York to Colorado in an afternoon and didn't then pass out from exhaustion.

But a girl can hope, can't she?

Sure! Sometimes it works.

And sometimes it just gets you a running companion who's wearing fatigues, helmet, gas mask, and a large backpack full of something that rattles like stone on stone.

(And also a couple of blue-striped alien eyeball dogs, because damn, those things can run when they want to.)

"Same as it ever did," replies Shephard easily, though his voice is a little muffled by the mask. "Needed t'git some extra time in where folks couldn't git hold of me. It's busy as ass back home. How 'bout you?"

"Makes sense," says Shephard. Shit, he did the same thing more often than not after Mongolia, he's in no position to criticize. "How much longer, you reckon?"

"Goddamn. That's gotta fuckin' hurt."

Say what you want about what Redondo had to do to his arm in Mongolia, but at least the man did neat work.

"You got somebody here lookin' in on that every so often? You c'n stop me askin' questions if you want," he adds. "I ain't tryin' to git nosy."

Shephard nods. "Keep me posted," he says. "I'm in 'n out a lot these days. Got a shitload of extra stuff to get caught up on, I just ain't got the time back home."
