There is a nine-foot-tall knuckle-walking junkyard robot seated on the floor near the fireplace.
Two eighteen-month-old children are entertaining themselves by climbing all over said robot.
So yeah. That's a thing that's happening.

(The idea that the giant metal... thing... is a bodyguard hasn't occurred to him yet, it looks like they're alone.)

He waves back, tentatively.
"Hello, children."

"Hi!" says the red-haired child a little further down.
Bwoop! says the robot, giving a little wave himself.

...well, that's new.
He offers them a smile. "Are you not with your parents?"

Mwrr, D0G concurs.

"Forgive me, I've never seen anything quite like... D0G... before. It is your guardian?"

"Does it speak?" he tries.
(He's not very experienced in dealing with toddlers.)

"...ah. But you are intelligent. Do you protect these children?"

"I see. In that case, I need have no concern about them here."
No one would get past the nine-foot robot.

He can't help a smile at that.
"And it seems they also consider you their friend."

That's... really sort of adorable, even from an enormous metal dog with hands, which Ichabod has apparently decided to treat like a person.
"Then it's a pleasure to meet you, Master D0G, and children... I don't believe I got your names."
no subject
"Hope," says the dark-haired child, pointing to her chest.
no subject
"Eli and Hope." He smiles. "What lovely names. And do you take good care of your sister, Master Eli?"

Ichabod returns it, still with 18th century mindset.
"I admit at your age, Miss Hope's honour is not at risk, but a brother should protect his sister from... bullies, and such, if they should come along."

"No?" He raises his eyebrows at her, amused - and a little impressed by her spirit.

"You feel able to protect yourself, then?"

He laughs, but it's not at her in any unkind sense.
"Well, I stand corrected. You are certainly very fierce."
no subject
And don't you forget it!

Ichabod grins back.
"Perhaps I should be advising you to take care of your brother. Or the two of you, of each other."
