Ichabod comes in, sits at the Bar, and is promptly presented with a complete Thanksgiving dinner and explanatory note concerning what date it is.

After murmuring a polite and mostly automatic word of thanks, he sits and stares at it.

He... can't think of a lot to be thankful for in his own life, right now.

"We shall see what comes of it," Lady Margolotta says. "And quantum is -- it sounds perfectly reasonable when Mr. Stibbons or another one of the young wizards explains it, but I can't really reproduce the theory afterwards."

"The wizards are finding a way to combine it with magic, whatever it is?"

"I think it combines with everything," Lady Margolotta says. "Magic, science, whatever else there might be."

"I see."

No, he doesn't.

"It's like an underlying principle of everything, of reality being real or not," Lady Margolotta says. "But I don't understand it, either."

"...I think I am generally happier with accepting that reality is always real", he says after a moment.

"I think part of the quantum is that it not always is," Lady Margolotta says.

"I am not in any way equipped to think about such things", he says easily.

"And I'm only equipped to listen to them and nod politely," she admits.

"Sometimes when experts in a subject get started, that is the only appropriate response."

"While they are talking, they do make sense," Lady Margolotta assures him. "Only afterwards, I can't really recall what it was that I understood. Perhaps that's because of quantum."

"Perhaps it is."

He has no idea.

"We might want to talk about something else," Lady Margolotta says, "as we managed to talk ourselves into a corner of mutually admitted utter ignorance."

"It would seem advisable, yes." Wry.

"So," she says, "the weather?"
