Solstice Gifts (millitimed to Saturday)

Sunshine has been busy. There has been a lot of baking and gift-basket arranging, but soon they are all finished to her liking, and cards have been written. So tonight, though it takes many trips between the bar and the kitchen, Rae leaves the complete collection of gifts with the bar, to be picked up by the recipients the next time they come in.

For Autor, there is a basket of chocolate croissants, individually-wrapped cinnamon rolls, strawberry meringue cookies, many flavors of lace cookies in a decorative tin, two loaves of spinach-feta cheese bread, and a round tin of black tea with bergamot, blue cornflower petals, blackberries and orange peels. With the basket is a note, reading: Happy Solstice, Autor! We've come through a lot together since those first croissants so many months ago, and I'm sure we can weather whatever else the multiverse might throw at us. I hope the coming year is bright and bounteous, bringing beaucoups of affection and an awesome amount of alliteration. Thank you for being my friend. Much love, Sunshine

For Dr. Hannibal Lecter, there is a basket containing a caramel-apple croustade, individually-wrapped cinnamon rolls, a small wheel of Bitter Chocolate Death, strawberry meringue cookies, tangy Lemon Lechery bars, many flavors of lace cookies in a decorative tin, and a loaf of rosemary sourdough. With the basket is a note, reading: Happy Solstice, Dr Lecter! I've enjoyed getting to know you this past year, and I very much treasure the friendship we share. I hope your midwinter is merry and bright, and the coming year is full of good friends, good food, and light. Thank you for being my friend. Best wishes, Sunshine

For Jason Todd, there is a basket containing individually-wrapped cinnamon rolls, a small wheel of Bitter Chocolate Death, Caramel Cataclysms, tangy Lemon Lechery bars, Chocoholia, strawberry meringue cookies, ginger-orange muffins, and many flavors of lace cookies in a decorative tin. With the basket is a note, reading: Happy Solstice, Jay! I know we've only recently met, but I value the friendship we've cultivated. Though the days are currently short and the nights are cold, the light will soon return. The days will grow warmer, and hopefully the nights will grow kinder. Thank you for being my friend. Take care of yourself. -Sunshine

For Gavroche, there is a basket containing multitudes of individually-wrapped cinnamon rolls, strawberry meringue cookies, tangy Lemon Lechery bars, orange-ginger muffins, Chocoholia, a couple of chocolate croissants, and many flavors of lace cookies in a decorative tin. With the basket is a note, reading: Happy Solstice, Gavroche! Have some cinnamon rolls - this will, I hope, save you the effort of having to blackmail me for them. :) I hope your days are bright and your nights are kind, and that the coming year holds only good things for you and yours. Thank you for being my friend. -Sunshine

For Ichabod and Katrina Crane, there is an especially large basket, the contents of which are always in multiples of two, to make sharing easier. There are individually-wrapped cinnamon rolls, strawberry meringue cookies, Lemon Lechery bars, a small wheel of Bitter Chocolate Death, orange-ginger muffins, two loaves of spinach-feta cheese bread, and tin full of various flavors of lace cookies. With the basket is a note, reading: Happy Solstice, Ichabod and Katrina! I'm so glad I've had the opportunity to get to know you both in the past few months. I hope the coming year is a happier one than those that have gone before. Though everything is cold and dark now, brighter days and kinder nights are on their way. Thank you for being my friends. Best wishes, Rae Seddon

For Dr. Alana Bloom, there is a basket containing individually-wrapped cinnamon rolls, a loaf of five-seed bread, various flavors of lace cookies in a decorative tin, and orange-ginger muffins. With the basket is a note, reading: "Happy Solstice, Dr. Bloom! Though we've only met the once, I wanted to say how glad I am that we met, and that I look forward to getting to know you in the coming year. May your days be bright and your nights be kind. Best wishes, Rae Seddon

For Lord Elrond, there is a basket containing many flavors of lace cookie in a decorative tin, a small wheel of Bitter Chocolate Death, a loaf of spinach-feta cheese bread, a loaf of rosemary sourdough, and a loaf of five-seed bread. With the basket is a note, reading: Happy Solstice, Lord Elrond! Thank you for being my friend. I will forever treasure the kindnesses you have shown me. I hope the coming year is one of warmth and brightness, joy and peace. Best wishes to you. -Rae Seddon

For Balthazar Blake, there is a basket containing all of the cinnamon rolls. The basket is, in fact, able to hold multitudes more cinnamon rolls than it should physically be able to. Rae has been doing her homework. There's no note - Balthazar knows what she'd say, anyway. It's Solstice, the darkest day of the year. It's cold and awful outside, but the sun is on its way back. So no matter how impossible things seem... things're lookin' up.

For all of Rae's other acquaintances and friends, there are tins of lace cookies, or plates of orange-ginger muffins, or plates of cinnamon rolls the size of human skulls, or plates of strawberry meringue cookies, each left with a note reading: "Happy Solstice! -Sunshine" that will appear next time they order from the bar.

Lastly, before she heads upstairs to her room to sleep, Rae makes a sizable donation to the Children and Bound Patrons' Fund, in Urquhart's honor.

Autor enters the bar from home weary and frustrated, but brightens considerably once he receives Sunshine's note. He noshes on one of the strawberry meringue cookies and codes the rest away in his sylladex for later.

Then he leaves a present of his own with the bar, one which he'd commissioned from Teja a while back for just this purpose.

Happy Solstice, Rae, his note reads. It has been a privilege and an honor to know you. Thank you for teaching me how to be a friend. -A.

Next time, Sunshine comes in, a gift will be waiting for her in return.

It is slim volume and though the giver finds it woefully inadequate compared to the gift Rae has already given him in the shape of the photo album, he still hopes she'll be able to put it to good use.

The book is filled with an assortment of recipes, small bits of food lore and mealtime customs, and a list of useful herbal teas and tinctures, all in a smooth and beautiful hand.

Elrond really does have excellent penmanship.

There's no note, but there's a small dedication on the frontispiece.
To Rae of the sunlight from Elrond of the Hidden Valley. Safe travels.

Jason finds the basket of baked goods and smiles, looking through the treats. Seeing she's not around to thank, he leaves Rae a quick note.

Hey Rae,

Thanks, that means a lot to me. So do you. Hope the sun’s warm enough for you soon. Have a great Solstice and I’ll see you when I get back. Got things I need to do but I won’t be gone long.

Thanks again. I owe you... a lot.
Jay.
