There is a purple alicorn flying around the perimeter of the lake out back.

And by "flying," we mean "getting about ten feet off the ground before faceplanting a few yards in front of where she last took off."

Hey, whaddaya want? She's only had wings for a week and a half.

Cy is watching quietly. He can tell that the pegasus's approach to flight is all wrong. (It's a winged horse, so it must be a pegasus, related in some way to Twilight Sparkle.)

"Hey, need some help?"

"Mrphm," Twilight mumbles around a mouthful of turf. Whether that's a 'yes, please' or a 'no, thank you' is for Cyborg to figure out.

"I can't fly but I know a few things about flight. Aerodynamics. That sort of thing." He has no idea if she will want help, but he always tries.

Twilight lifts her head and spits out the dirt and grass before replying. "So do I. I've been reading every book on pegasus flight I can get my hooves on. But knowing the theory and applying it in practice are two different things."

[says_the_booyah]

He knows that voice. A voice that in some odd way always sounds familiar.

"Twilight? You never had wings. Did you?"

[no_vampires_plz]

"Not until the week before last, no," says Twilight. "It's kind of a long story."

[says_the_booyah]

"It usually is." He isn't going to pry.

"So it's like a new superpower. Not sure if that's cool or disturbing."

[no_vampires_plz]

"It's not just the wings, either. I'm officially a princess now."

She's still not quite sure how to feel about that.

[says_the_booyah]

"A princess. Like in you have to lead your people and all?" He thinks for a second.

"I wish you could meet Starfire. She has way too much in common with you."

[no_vampires_plz]

"Not... exactly?" she says hesitantly. "I...don't really have any specific responsibilities, yet."

A beat.

"Who's Starfire?"

[says_the_booyah]

"One of my teammates. She's a princess, too. Just not on Earth. She got dragged home to Tamaran to be the queen. And really didn't want to do it. Good thing they were reasonable about it.

"And she developed new powers, too. She's really cool." And if Cy has any sort of crush on her, he's never actually noticed.

[no_vampires_plz]

Twilight, on the other hand, has noticed, but has enough tact not to mention it. Yet.

"...wait, I'm confused. Is she queen now or isn't she?"

[says_the_booyah]

"She told them she wanted to stay on Earth, and named her old instructor drill sergeant to rule in her place.

"She didn't like being told what to do. Or who to marry." Alien politics are, well, alien. So Cy doesn't pretend to get it.

Fortunately, Twilight isn't alone outside should the faceplanting cause some serious hurt.

"Hey, are you okay?" Lucas asks once she takes her latest dirt snack.

Never mind how he got from his spot in the garden to the lake so fast. He's already figured out his new mode of transportation.

"Yeah," she says wearily as she picks herself up from yet another faceplant. "Nothing damaged except my dignity."

[pullsneedles]

"Oh." He doesn't know how to fix dignity. "Guess the wings're new?"

"Is it that obvious?"

[pullsneedles]

"I didn't mean like that," Lucas goes. "Or, shoot, I guess I did. They weren't hurt or nothin', were they?"

"When I fell? No, they're fine. I'm just still figuring out how to use them."

[pullsneedles]

"Oh no, I meant if they were hurt, then you'd be outta practice on flyin'. Okay, you know what? I'm just makin' that worse. I'm gonna stop sayin' stuff about your wings and try again."

He holds out a hand.

"Hi. I'm Lucas."

[no_vampires_plz]

"My name's Twilight Sparkle." She places a forehoof in the offered hand. "Pleased to meet you, Lucas."

[pullsneedles]

"Pleased to meetcha, too, Miss Twilight Sparkle. Say, would you happen to know Miss Pinkie Pie?"

[no_vampires_plz]

"Yes, she's one of my best friends," Twilight replies. "I take it you've met her here?"

[pullsneedles]

"Yeah. I think I kinda weirded her out, and she kinda weirded me out, too. But she was real sweet about it all the same."

A technicolor pink pony wasn't the best sight for him at the time.

Her smile turns a little wry. "Yeah, Pinkie tends to do that to people."
