Bonnie tries not to set more written work than necessary. Sure you need some diagrams when you're building big stuff, but essays and things are generally best left to the other subjects.

At the moment she's grading some tenth grade technical drawings, of variable quality. The first one has muddled up the maths required to calculate the voltage in each side of the circuit, the second has got the circuit right but definitely miscalculated some angles for their complex design.

The third one she stares at in despair, before writing in red pen:

Your box is fine, but this would definitely catch fire

She puts it to one side and gets out another. This one is, astonishingly, correct, but if this kid thinks she's supplying fifty light bulbs he's got another thing coming.

Jay brings her over a mug of coffee and peeks at the drawing s with a smile. "Well that's impressive. Couple of mirrors in the right spots and you could melt holes in things with that."

"Angel, thanks!" Bonnie accepts the coffee with a grin.

"More likely to blind someone, this one. He can build it if he wants, but he's bringin' his own fifty light bulbs."

She looks over at the one Jay's got. "Now that one looks like it could work as a weapon, you're right. Shame I don't get to run a class on that."

"You looked like you were running low." Jay smiles, flicking through her marking with an engineer's eye. "What are they meant to be demonstrating?" All of them are so different.

"I asked them to design a mains powered lamp that would appeal to someone their own age." Bonnie says. "They got to show me the wiring before they start, so's they don't get electrocuted."

"Mains powered lamp? Really?" Jay raises an eyebrow higher. "Pretty sure that one's a prototype deathray."

"Maybe if you did it with lasers."

"I'd watch this one. He has serious supervillain potential." Jay chuckles, "So how ya been, Bonnie?"

"Oh, not too bad." Bonnie says. "Told the little brat who graffitied my door that he could clean it off or I would call the cops. You?"

"And did he clean it off?" He shrugs, kind of uncomfortable answering. "Some stuff happened that wasn't real fun but I'm past the worst of it now."

"Sure did, little runt." Bonnie grins in satisfaction.

She notices the shrug. "You look less puny than last time I saw yer. You wanna talk about it?"

"Let's hope he learnt his lesson."

He shrugs again. "Not much to talk about really. Fell out with a friend over... over something stupid I did. Didn't handle it very well. Either of us. Hit a few nerves of issues I need to deal with. Still trying to work out what to do about it."

"Well I ain't one to preach about drinkin'." Bonnie says. "Hell knows I drank far too much at yer age, and still do from time ter time now. Cain't hold it quite so good as I used to though. And it don't really solve the problem, just means you got to face it with a headache."

Jay can't help but chuckle. "No, it wasn't the booze. I only drink like that one day of the year. It's a... bad anniversary for me and it's my way of coping. No, the issue was around a... a relationship I'm in. One that can be detrimental to me if I'm careless and that day I was. My friends caught me out and ... overreacting."

"Cain't help who you fall for." Bonnie says, nodding. "You're a big boy, got to make yer own mistakes."

Jay shakes his head with a wry smile. "If only I could help it. Thanks Bonnie, that good of you. But the truth is I was the one who got defensive. My friends were just trying to look out for me and I reacted badly. I need to make it up to them somehow."

"Bake 'em a pie?" Bonnie suggests. "I can show you how to make a mean pie."

Jay laughs warmly. "She's the local baker. I'm sure your pie is awesome but knowing what she's like, she'd take one bite and start deconstruction it to come up with her own version."

"Oh Sunshine? I taught her somethin' about decoratin' cake the other day, so you never know." she winks at him.

"Besides, she'll appreciate you tried."

"That's her. Only I'm pretty sure she's a vegetarian. Think you can teach me veggie pie?"
