Some time after their rather hopeless conversation, (though unaware of the outcome of Javert's discussion with Lecter), Guppy comes back and leaves a note for Javert.
'Dear Javert,
I wish to sincerely apologise for how I spoke to you the other day. I was horrified at the thought that the case was about to be blown wide open and someone may get hurt, but that was absolutely no justification for the way I spoke to you.
It is very clear that the doctor-patient relationship between us has broken down since the argument between you and Alexander, and me treating you psychologically would be a bad idea. If you still want to pursue a diagnosis, I have instructed Bar which form to give you, which you can mark yourself or take to either Dr Crowe or Prof Xavier. As I said, I don't think you have any need to, but you must do what you feel is right.
Should you need me for medical matters, or you wish to discuss the problems with Lecter further, I would be happy to assist. Otherwise I will respect your wishes and not offer you any further help.
Guppy'
He sits a little way from the bar when he's done, looking at the disturbing picture Gene left him.

He puts his feet up on another chair, and lights a fag.
'What'd you say to him?'

Guppy sighs. "He then started spouting off about going to have it out with Lecter. I was worried Lecter would kill him, so I had to tell him about the murder and cannibalism side of things.
"Then he started demanding to go and confront Lecter himself, despite my pleas, despite my protestations that doing so could get people killed. In the end I got rather cross with him, and had to leave in order not to call him a pernicious wanker."
Beat.
"And then I wrote him a letter of apology for nearly calling him a pernicious wanker."
no subject
'What'd you stop him for? I already told Lecter everyone thinks he's a murderer.'
no subject
"When? Was that when I was searching?"
Guppy shakes his head.
"I thought Javert might be killed, since he was the one to start all the suspicion off. He's the last person who should be going near Lecter."
no subject
Gene is, quite obviously, unconcerned.
'Look, Lecter's not going to kill anyone in this bar. If he's lasted long enough to be a serial killer, he's not stupid. Doing it at home where there's only humans is one thing. Doing it here, where there are people like X who can smell what you've done, or psychics like Xavier who can read your mind and stop you before you even pick up the knife...he's not that bloody thick. He'd have to have a suicide mission. And he doesn't have that.'

He asks a waitrat to bring him a cup of tea and whatever Gene is having.
"I know we can't get him on crimes outside the bar but at very least he needs keeping an eye on, and he shouldn't be working here. And if we can't nail him on Security, Hell, I'll do it on infection control if I have to."
Hannibal can't be allowed to go and treat patients if he eats people. It's just not hygienic.

He orders a double whiskey. It's that kind of day.
'You do what you have to do to stop him. I'll back you on it. But I'm saying that even if we don't know what makes him kill people at home, we do know he hasn't been caught. And if he were an out-and-out psycho, he would have been. He has to look normal enough for people not to have noticed what he's doing yet.'

To be fair, he hasn't sent her a note, yet.
'Molly Hayes is keeping an eye on him as well. Teja knows what's going on. It's not about what we can do, anyway. Even if we can prove he's a killer at home, that's bugger all to do with us.'
And he hates it, but there it is.
'It'll be a total ballache if we have to have him under twenty-four surveillance, but that's what it might come down to.'

He hadn't thought of it quite like that because to him, a killer is a killer. he muses on it now, chewing vaguely on his lower lip.
'It's not like Urquhart, who said he was an assassin by trade. And he's had every opportunity to admit it. I think he just likes thinking he's clever, though.'

Milliways being what it is, people talk, and fall into things, and there isn't any rule against it. He usually finds it preferable. Just not when there might be a murderer on the loose.
'Who's the colleague?'

"Would you care to join me for a cup of tea and some biscuits?"

He looks like he's had marginally more sleep than last time she saw him.

"Black or green tea?"
no subject
He's not fussy about his biscuits.

"How is Frog?"
[OOC: sorry if I got her name wrong?]

"Fran hasn't gone by Frogspawn for ages, it was drawing too much attention at the playground gates." he says, but smiles fondly at the memory. "And she's doing well. Her sister keeps winding her up telling her she looks pregnant again because she never quite gained the same shape since Brooke, but she told the kids that a lady can be any shape."

"Though I hear that is what siblings do."
