[oom: The Summer Holidays are full of changes. Fry finds himself able to slot in somehow.]

It's been an okay sort of day, all things considered. Fry found he didn't have a lot in common with Grandpa's girlfriend's kids, but it did mean they spent most of the day playing video games.

At the end, as promised, the other boys gave Fry their maths holiday homework to do, which he is currently enjoying filling in in his usual booth in the bar.

The idea that this is some sort of cheating, and the fact that their teachers may well notice the different handwriting, has not yet occurred to him, and may well be worth pointing out to him.

"Hello!" Mairi stands outside the booth, bouncing up and down on her toes. "Can I sit with you?"

"Yes." Fry says. "So long as you don't touch me."

He smiles slightly as he fills in another answer on the homework.

"Won't," Mairi promises as she climbs in the other side of the booth.

She opens a vidwindow and looks at it thoughtfully. Then she reaches out and begins tapping in answers on it. "(0,0,0) is #000000 is (0,0,0,1) is black..."

Fry glances up.

"0100...0011 01...10...1111 01101111 0110...1100" he says, somewhat slower than she does, with a tone of applied thought.

"01010100 01101000 01100001 01101110 01101011 01110011." Mairi goes fast - someone will have to tell her to slow it down.

"I'm learning the colors. RGB, hex code, CMYK, and localized English names."

There is a pause as Fry effectively plays that back in his head.

"You're welcome." he says, once he gets to the fourth letter.

"What's hex code?"

"It's RGB in hexadecimal units. Daddy says they use it a lot in the web."

Mairi pops open another window, this one tilted so both she and Fry can see it. There's a '(255,0,0)', '#FF0000', '(0,1,1,0), and the word red on the screen. "They're all the same color, but they're different ways of measuring it. Only, I don't get the letters one."

Fry looks away because the red is quite bright.

"You can't read the letters but you can read binary?"

"I can read them! I just... Why's (0,255,0) called green, but (255,255,0) is called yellow? They've got one letter in common, but yellow is only one letter longer than green, but it's twice as long as red. Since (255,255,0) has two maxed numbers, shouldn't the word for it be twice as long as both of the words for the colors that make it up?"

"Because users don't name things logically." Fry says. "They use bits of old languages."

"Oh." No wonder she can't figure out the maths for that conversion.

She reaches up and closes out the vidwindow. "What're you doing?"

"I had to go to Grandpa's girlfriend's house today because I got kicked out of kids club." Fry says. "My step-uncles let me do their maths homework."

He sounds happy about this.

"Aww, what'd they kick you out for?"

She totally understands being happy about math homework. That's like having breathing homework!

"Make sure they use their own cookies when they turn it in. If it's still got your cookie on it, the teacher will know they didn't do the work." Little pitchers have big ears.

"I called the police because I was frightened." Fry says. "Apparently it was called a diss-co.

"What kind of cookies?"

Mairi turns that over in her head. She's not sure what a diss-co is, but she knows who you're supposed to call if you're scared and something weird is happening. "Police are like Guardians?"

Fry's question earns a confused look. "What do you mean what kind of cookies?"

"Yes." Fry says. "They said I wasted their time but I didn't mean to."

He looks at the work. "I can't see any cookies on the book."

Mairi frowns. That's not how Guardians are supposed to work! She's going to tell Daddy about these Guardians, and he'll make it better.

Then she squints at the paper. "Maybe that stuff doesn't record cookies...?"

Her tone of voice says she thinks that's really, really weird.

"We just have names on it." Fry says.

"So it does record cookies!"

"You have to write it yourself."

"Okay." Mairi looks back at her homework then frowns. It's scrolled down a page without her. So she scrolls back up to look at red some more.
