"You're wet," PeeJee said.

"It'd be sexy if you didn't look so unhappy. What's wrong?"

KARR followed after PeeJee, then turned and bumped his prow gently against Kitt's legs. "I'll have to second her question."

"Michael's in jail," he said. The corollary to this was obviously, "I've been impounded."

And seeing as Karr was close, he leaned there. "I hate impound."

"Ohh, honey," PeeJee said, giving him a hug... that ended quickly, because of damp. "What happened? And thank god Aubrey wandered off."

"Thank god indeed." KARR, meanwhile, didn't mind the damp, and let Kitt lean against him. "Why not break out of it, then?"

"Aubrey?"

Already, he was learning well. There was a hint of trepidation in his voice when he said that name. "He was framed. I've already done a DMV check on the woman who did it - she pulled a gun on him and Michael disarmed her in time for a police cruiser to show up. And guess who had the gun by then, even if he had unloaded it."

He sighed. "And I can't break out. Not without bringing up a few too many questions."

"She stopped by. It was ... eventful. No guns, though. Well," she said, philosophically, "If she presses charges, they'll find out the gun's hers. If she doesn't, he'll probably be out by tomorrow. So it's probably okay. I think lying to a police officer can at least get you fined, possibly arrested, so I doubt there will be charge-pressing."

Divert attention from Aubrey meeting Karr by talking about Michael. That could work.

"Questions are generally a difficult matter. But PeeJee's correct; he ought to be out soon enough. And if not...well, possibly you could think up ways to answer those awkward questions while you're in impound."

"I'm sure I'll be out tomorrow. Records already indicate that since the gun wasn't in his hand and wasn't loaded, there's a limited amount they can do, besides." He paused. "But the weather there is awful. I don't think it's stopped raining for more than ten minutes since we arrived."

PeeJee looked rather pointedly at Karr. "Slick pavement, huh?"

She was reminded of a conversation they'd had on a similar topic-- Kitt's traction, and whether or not it had saved Michael's life.

KARR's scanner speeds up a bit at the look. "Yes, Kitt-I had heard you had difficulties with slick pavement. Were they quite as bad today?"

His brows lowered as he looked critically between PeeJee and Karr. "Of course not. A slight shift in the distributor power and any road conditions are easily handled."

"Huh."

Lookit that, PeeJee's doing her Inscrutable face.

"Mm, I see." His scanner continues to flick rapidly.

"Of all people, Karr, you should understand. You obviously had no trouble with traction in the snow outside." Surely Karr wasn't suggesting, again, that he was an "inferior production line model".

"Pretty good driver in all conditions, then? I mean, you wouldn't be any kind of heroic car if a little bit of slick pavement stopped you..."

"Of course I understand; I was just curious as if things had stayed the same when they built you."

But kitt looked between them with defensively narrowed eyes. "The way the two of you are acting, I've committed some sort of terrible wrong by being able to drive through a puddle."

"You had some trouble once before."

"I'm sure you recall it, Kitt. Even as a human, your memory ought to be excellent."

"I sense maleness." Look! It's Aubrey.

He wasn't sure if he'd just been saved or damned, what with the line the previous conversation had been following. He knew what they were talking about now, and he didn't want to think about it.

And so he segued. "I'm guessing you're Aubrey," Kitt said.

"I am Aubrey." She says it the same way someone might say, "I am the Queen of France, go and eat cake."

"I'm guessing you must be Kitt."

"Oh fu... un." There goes the ~~posting order~~ neighborhood. PeeJee managed not to facepalm. "Hi, Aubrey."

"Hello, Aubrey." KARR moved so his prow was more in front of Kitt than to his side-almost as if he was trying to shield Kitt.
