Bonnie has holed up in one corner of the bar. On the table in front of her are two pieces of paper, one a formal-looking legal document, and the other an invitation card.

She's been staring at both for an hour, and finally gets out a pen and a card. She hovers over the card, and then waves over a waitrat.

"Budweiser please..."

Dammit this is hard. How do you decide between attending the graduation of one of your boys or the court case of another?

Sameth's on his way to find a table and almost bumps into the rat coming over to Bonnie, "Sorry, are you feeling all right?"

She looks worried, he's still dressed for court in his surcoat.

Bonnie looks up.

"Hey Sameth, I'm fine, just got a difficult decision." She sighs. "One of my boys is gettin' his doctorate on the same date as one of my other boys has to be in court fer car theft. I cain't attend both."

"Oh, is there going to be a party for the one getting his doctorate? Maybe you could do that and then you would be able to see both of them and not ignore either."

"Maybe, I better call him up and ask him." Bonnie sighs. "I guess he might understand. I went to his first graduation at least."

"He probably will and it doesn't hurt to explain."

"All the odds, huh, you don't get a social event fer months then two at once." Bonnie thanks the rat for her beer. "How you keepin'?"

"Busy, but not too bad. That seems to be how life works, its nothing and then everything all at once."

"Yeah, in term time it's manic, in vacation time it's... endless days."

"I remember that from school, but my summer's were always busy as I went home."

"Only so many times yer can rewrite lesson plans."

"I guess, I don't know a lot about teaching and I'm bad at explaining anything."

"These things can be learned with practice." Bonnie says. "I bet you ain't that bad. When I started teachin' I wasn't a teacher neither, I was an engineer. My predecessor was called up and beggers cain't be choosers."

"Most people look confused when I try to talk about what I do."

"Don't mean yer a bad teacher." Bonnie says. "Students can be mighty stupid. That's part of the fun I guess."

She smiles slightly. "I got one boy, Baz, he started last term after he got expelled, and he got quite an attitude - he decided to do his jigsaw in the shape of a swear word, thought I wouldn' notice. I gave him an A and told him if he could do that kinda skill without the swearin', I'd put his work on display.

"My class is the only one he passed last year, and only jus', because you cain't get a scrap of written work from him. He's retakin' the grade, but I managed to get him to enrol in my advanced carpentry class."

"Oh, that's good. I spent a while doing something I could do but wasn't good at it. It matters when someone sees what you can do."

"He'd make a mighty fine carpenter. I jus' got to get the boy to admit he cain't read so we can actually help hm."

"That's not easy, no one wants to admit what they don't or they're bad at."

"I know. If he don't admit it, he'll fail his high school diploma, but he'd probably be able to do good work in a furniture store."

"I hope it doesn't come to that, its hard to fail."

"I know. But high school ain't fer everyone. Lot of my boys didn't get their diploma, some of them did it later, but nearly all of them are workin'. Everyone's good fer somethin', you just gotta bring it out. And then it ain't failin'."

"No, but it can feel close to it when you're trying to make yourself do something that you're not suited for."

"I know. High school can be so tough fer kids."

"It was the family business for me. I liked Somersby though it was always a little strange since I wasn't from Ancelstierre."

"Was Somersby your school?"

"Yes, a boarding school that was pretty far from home but it was a good place."

"Did you miss yer folks?"

"I did but they visited sometimes and my sister was at a school not too far away. I met my best friend there."

"Few of my boys had been ter boardin' school at one time or another." Bonnie says. "Didn' tell to do well there, or they'd not have ended up with me."

"Oh, my mother went to boarding school and it worked for her. That's why Ellie and I went."

"I went ter school whatever town we were in at the time." Bonnie says. "Learned most of what I know from my pa."

"At home, my parents helped teach me a lot along with the guards who made sure, make sure that Ellie and I know how to use a sword. Dad's best with offensive magic and Mother with fighting the Dead."

"Did they teach that sorta thing at yer school?"

"No, they didn't believe in magic there, some people didn't even believe in the place I came from. That was strange."

"Where did they send yer school fees bill?"

"The people in charge understood. You see the Wall separates my home the Old Kingdom from Ancelstierre, but the school was far from the Wall. So people who didn't come from near the Wall or work with the government in some way didn't really understand."

"I see." Bonnie nods.

"Can I get you a drink?"

"Oh, sure, thanks. Other than the two schedules messing up, how are you doing?"

"Not so bad thanks." Bonnie nods. "I got John Two doin' some work with me ter pay off his debt, so at least I know where he is."

"Does he have a lot of it?"

"Yeah, he got in trouble with some loan sharks, but the bikers have paid them off and now he only has to pay them back."

"Oh, I hope its not too much trouble for him," Sam's never had to worry about debts so he doesn't know what would be involved.

"Better than gettin' his teeth kicked in by the loan sharks."

"Yes, avoiding a fight is always best."

Bonnie nods. Well, she took most of the fight for him, but t doesn't do to dwell on that.

"Are you workin' on much in the forge?"

"Not here, no, I've got enough to do at home that I don't really do much here."

"Yeah, I know that feeling."
