(no subject)

Diaval has observed the human concept of drinking wine to make one’s self feel better and after the day he’s had, decided to give it a try.

Only he really doesn’t like the taste.

*sip* *pull disgusted face* *sip again* This getting drunk thing shouldn’t be so hard!

Autor blinks at him. And blinks again. And finally shuts his book and approaches. "What on earth are you doing?"

Diaval looks over at his friend. "I'm drinking wine. Isn't that what men do when they are sad and need to not be sad any more?"

"Oh, no, what happened?" Autor asks, furrowing his brow with concern. He sets his book on the counter. "Some men do, but... I don't recommend it. You lose control of yourself, and possibly become mean, and end up with a headache afterwards."

"The queen of the human realm is with child. My mistress is... very, very upset." And she's upset, it's bad for everyone.

He sighs and pushes the glass away. "Wine tastes disgusting."

"Does it?" Autor says, watching the wine slosh a bit over the edge.

He frowns a little. "I'm sorry that your mistress is upset, and that that upsets you. Why does the human queen's child upset her?"

Granted the wine Diaval ordered wasn't very good but he won't know the difference.

"The king. They were once friends but he betrayed and maimed her to further his ambitions. He will have family and she... she is very alone."

"Ah, I see," Autor says, lacing his fingers together. "She has you, though, but I know that's not the same as a child."

He chokes a pained little laugh. "I don't believe she sees me that way, no."

And that laughter is awful. Autor winces a bit. "Sorry. Do you know what she plans to do?"

"I don't know. She's so upset, so tormented. I fear-" He breaks off. He should never have to fear her but he does. "I don't know what she will do."

"And because of that, you don't know what you will do either," Autor guesses. "I know that her being alone right now is the root of the problem, but she might be inconsolable at the moment. There might not be anything you can do."

He shakes his head. "I... I understand why you wanted to get drunk. There are easier ways to go about it."

He nods, his eyes red. "She will not trust another man. Never again. And I cannot find anyway to bring her solace."

"Will you show me?"

"Her wounds run deep, then," Autor says, furrowing his brow. "Treachery like that breeds a great deal of distrust. It must be difficult for you and for her."

At Diaval's request, Autor starts. "Ah? Me? Well, I'm not the best at this. I've never done it before. As far as I know, you order a drink that you enjoy. There are sweet ones, like eggnog."

"Just so." He says sadly.

"I like eggs." It's a start at least. "But I have never known eggs you can drink."

"Well, this is eggs and milk and cloves and nutmeg," Autor says, tilting his head. "And rum, naturally, which is what makes it alcoholic. You might like wassail, too--that tastes like an apple pie, if you've ever had one of those."

"I know about apple pies. In the autumn, the farmers wives make them." He grins, "And leave them on windowsills to cool."

That grin is startling, and Autor finds himself smiling back. "Have you eaten one, is the question now. They're good with ice cream, if you've had that."

"Not a whole one. I've tried but the farmer's wives usually notice before I get too far. And you've got to be quick to dodge a broom swung with force."

"What's ice-cream?"

"Ice cream is a frozen dessert made with milk or cream and sugar," Autor says, and orders up a small bowl of vanilla, which he nudges towards Diaval. "Here, try some."

He examines the bowl and pokes it gently. "How do I eat it?"

"You use the spoon," Autor says, pointing it out. "You scoop some ice cream up with the bigger end, and hold the spoon by the handle."

It take him a couple of goes to get the hang of the spoon. These things are trickier than they look. But then he manages to take a mouthful. "Sweet! But cold!" The cold takes him by surprise and he pants a little.

Autor chuckles. "Yes! That's the point of ice cream. You can order all manner of flavors and toppings, like nuts or chocolate sauce."

"Toppings? What's chocolate?" He tries a little more, fascinated by the cold and the sweet flavours.

"Oh, Shiva wept, you haven't had chocolate either, that's right," Autor says, and orders up a dark chocolate bar and nudges it towards Diaval. "It's a sweet, too, but it used to be a drink. And toppings are things you put on top of the ice cream and other dishes."

He nudges the foil wrapper, not sure what to make of it.

Autor unpeels the foil for him and breaks off a piece of the chocolate. "Here, sorry."

"Oh." He breaks off a small section and pops it in his mouth. It takes him a long moment to work out the taste but he likes it. A lot.

Autor watches his face change like sand in an hourglass and smiles. "Like it?"

"This is... I don't have words for how good this is!"

The boy laughs gently. "I'm glad you approve," he says. "You can even get chocolate ice cream. Don't eat the ice cream too fast, though, you may end up with a headache."

He nods seriously and takes his time, eating it slowly.

And Autor lets him, ordering one for himself to enjoy right along with him.
