Busy day today for Gredya.

First she's in the kitchen, putting up one more freezer bag of meat. That's enough for now, she thinks: she's filled one shelf, a cache for the hardest times of winter. She has another bag, marked again with a note like last time: Ganibal Leckter. You see this before? Gredya. It'll wait for him at one end of the bar if he doesn't happen to show up. Inside--if anyone cares to snoop on Lecter's mail!--is a smallish dog-like creature (deceased) with a forked tail-tip and oddly squared-off ears.

Once she's taken care of that, she heads outside with a stack of books. It's not just her adult-literacy text now. She's expanding her reading material.

(And she's botherable in either location!)

She hears him coming, and closes her book: a lavishly-produced atlas. "Hello. So, that animal, is it new for you?"

"It looks a bit like a dog," Dr. Lecter says, "but it isn't. Yes, it's new to me. What is it?"

Shrug. "It's from the same world as the flying snakes. I don't think I will hunt there much more, but that thing was new to me. I think it was something smart, but not smart like people."

She's speaking Russian, of course, now that she knows he speaks it too.

"It looks like something from ancient Egyptian art," Dr. Lecter says.

"Egyptian? I don't know. This world, the place where I go, there are a few very old buildings. No people living there for a long, long time." She gets to her feet, stretching. "It's very quiet. --You think you will cook that?"

"I don't know," Dr. Lecter says. "I like dogs. On the other hand, there are traditional dog recipes in several parts of the world, especially China, of course, Vietnam, and Korea. As this thing is dead anyway, I think I will look them up."

"It has meat, you can eat it." Gredya eyes it with some skepticism: while the creature is certainly interesting, it doesn't look especially appetizing. "It eats eggs, I think. And insects. Small prey."

"That's good," Dr. Lecter nods. "Large predators high up on the food chain don't taste that nice, especially if they only eat meat."

"Like cat? Yes. --So, what kind of recipes, for dogs? Another fry?"

((Ugh, this cold is still kicking my butt, continued apologies for patchiness...))

"I think I'll marinade and grill the creature in the Indonesian style," Dr. Lecter says. "I could make a Korean soup, but that won't account for the entire meat."

"Marinade again." Look, she knows some cooking things now! "Do you always, with meat?"

"No," Dr. Lecter says. "But it's a good thing to do with the more pungent kinds of meat, and with meat I mean to grill. This is likely to be both."

"You will cook it today? Or another time? --You say, Egyptian art, that is in your world?"

"It is," Dr. Lecter says. "In my world, these creatures are mythical, from an ancient culture. It's a Set animal, a mythical creature accompanying the Egyptian god of the desert. And I think I shall singe, skin, butcher and marinate it today, and then grill it in a day or two, so the marinade takes nicely."

"Going with a god?" That's amusing; she grins. "I did not see it with anyone. God or not."

Giving the meat a day or two makes sense. It's probably a tough, stringy creature.

"If it has a god, he couldn't protect it," Hannibal says, shrugging.

"No. Often they cannot. You want help with it? Or no."

"Yes, if you'd like to," Dr. Lecter says. "We best do it outside; we need some fire."

"I can help." Setting fires? Why not? "Do you have, ah..." What's the word? "Match, matches, for fire. Or will Bar give them?"

"I don't," Dr. Lecter says. "But I have a lighter. Can you use that?"

"I don't know what that--wait. They use, for--? Humans?" She mimes lighting and smoking a cigarette, shoulders hunched against an imagined wind from some hypothetical farmyard in Belarus. "I have seen those, but I do not know how to use."

Dr. Lecter gets a nice golden lighter from his pocket and demonstrates.

"Hold it upright like this, and then turn that little wheel here with force."

A light springs up.

She takes it and tries, clumsily at first. It takes a few attempts. "What makes it work? Inside, it has...alcohol? Gasoline?"

A wonderful little tool.

"Something like gasoline," Dr. Lecter says. "You're getting the hang of it."

Gredya has very little first-hand experience with setting fires, but she at least knows that some things start them. She nods. "So, you need wood? What kind of fire is good for this?" An amused sideways smile, as she looks over her shoulder at the main building. "And do they have many rules about it?"
