A scientific experiment of the highest order is in progress. One which includes raspberry fudge, brie and crackers, and several different wines. Autor plans to get tipsy today, and he'll do it in style.

He'll also do it with help. Autor endures light ribbing by Sunshine, who has promised to stay with him and make sure he doesn't do anything foolish while even slightly inebriated--a serious concern of his, especially with a sprained ankle. She's keeping to tea today, just in case.

Autor raises a glass, his cheeks already tingling. He swirls the wine, as he has seen done before. Then he holds it up to his nose and takes a deep breath. "Ah, yes. This clean, buttery wine has a heady bouquet with oak notes, and a spicy aroma of vanilla and currant," he says, and takes a sip. "Sadly, it is broad--it has a full body aroma, but lacks any finesse to its taste."

Rae grins, sipping her tea. "Try harder not to sound like you memorized the book, Autor."

"You remember something that didn't happen?" Gavroche teases him. "Pumpkin all round, then."

"You're damn right I did," Autor says, grinning as if this is a momentous accomplishment. "I do that all the time."

And then he adopts a falsetto, resting his hand over his heart. "'When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.'"

Then he turns to Rae. "Sorry, I don't remember, lovely. I remember being hungry a lot when I was little and having someone give me a napkin ring but aside from that I have no idea."

"It was much more recent, for me," Rae grins at him, though her look is soft. "And so was giving you that napkin ring. I'm sorry it didn't work like it was supposed to."

She had hoped it would give him an escape much more often than it apparently did.

"It was supposed to bring him back here?" Gavroche guesses.

"Yup," Autor says, drawing said napkin ring out from the chain around his neck, which also holds his room key. "It's my special treasure. Whoever gave it to me really liked me and talked of stories and other warm things."

"Still does, too," Rae murmurs into her tea, leaning against Autor and putting an arm around his shoulders.

"We should tell stories sometime, Autor. You too, Gavroche. People come here from all over, with different stories. It would be great to hear them all."

"Oh, I've got lots of stories", he says with a grin. "I was a little adventurer."

"Stories can be dangerous," Autor says seriously, adjusting his glasses. "Sometimes they take over towns." And then he's back to cheerful again. "But if people wanted to tell them in the bar, we could put them together in a book with a nice binding and let other people read it, because freedom of the press is a very good thing!"
